Chapter I – Yes, I’m Ready
“I’m Tina, Tina Kennard, and I think you’re a cousin, several times removed. I’d heard of you and your family while growing up … such a unique story. And, yeah, a nice, unique name, so I guess your name stuck in my mind,” Tina explained. After some effort to coax Jade into conversation, Tina managed to strike a warmer exchange with the shy, young woman by the time they’d reached their adjoining rooms.
Later that evening, during a dinner for the guests of the bride, while Tina had been socializing with others from the studio, Bette and Jade had talked at greater length as they hung out in front of the huge fireplace in the cavernous central hall of the lodge. It was then that Bette had shared that she’d been scouting places where she and Tina could have their wedding. “But we don’t have a lot of time to plan this … we’re intending to get married in about four months … although I do have a few places in mind already,” Bette had explained.
“What do you think, Jade? If we head out at around 7, run for an hour, hop into the shower …” Bette started to ask their new young friend now, winking conspiratorially at her.
“Bette, you are incorrigible!” Tina exclaimed.
They all shared another laugh.
“So … do you think you’ll choose this place?” Jade asked again after they settled down. Jade bent to pick up her cup of lemonade which she’d set on the floor earlier.
“It’s possible …” Bette answered with a smile, drawing out her response, and then squeezing Tina’s hand, when the blonde raised her eyebrows in surprise.
“It’ll be tough to pull together something like that in a far-away place like this, or at least far from New York, given the time left, don’t you think?” Tina observed, and then bit her lower lip as she shifted her glance from Jade towards Bette. “Honey, I’m really sorry that I haven’t been able to help you much with the wedding and everything…”
“Babe, I’ve said already that all your planning for our honeymoon is more than enough, ok?” Bette interrupted the blonde quickly, turning to face her also, and then gave Tina a quick kiss, as if to assure her. “I know you’ve got simultaneous productions going on, so …”

Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .
As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
