    It had been purely by accident that they’d met – and in Jackson, Wyoming, of all places! – as Tina had exclaimed. They had been checking in at the same time, and Tina had overheard the clerk mention Jade’s name, striking up a conversation about how unusual it had been, and how well it suited Jade, given the twenty-year old’s striking Eurasian combination of jet-black hair and emerald green, slightly almond-shaped eyes, high cheekbones, porcelain skin, and aquiline nose. Jade was unusually tall, as well, easily over 5’-10”, and “still growing, I think,” she’d murmured to the clerk a little self-consciously, as she stooped slightly over the counter.

    They and many of the guests checking in were all in Jackson Hole to attend the wedding of a daughter of a senior exec in the studio Tina worked for. Since Tina had been on-set in Laramie, Nebraska, which was just hours away from Jackson Hole, the exec invited Tina to attend the wedding, who then invited Bette to join her as the blonde’s plus one.

    Jade was the girlfriend of the bride’s sister, and didn’t have a role in the wedding. Her girlfriend was the maid of honor, however, and was running around taking care of last minute things that had cropped up as well as overseeing the various activities planned for the wedding party and other guests. She’d been so busy that she’d barely chatted with Jade after picking her up from the airport and then leaving Jade at the check-in desk.

    Tina and Bette saw that the tall young woman was clearly a shy, retiring sort by nature, reticent about engaging with the clerk who was trying to strike up a conversation with her, and very different from her ebullient and vivacious girlfriend who was talking warmly with nearly everyone she came across.

    “Excuse me, are you Jade Wetmore, daughter of Lucy and Alan Wetmore?” Tina asked after they all stepped away from the check-in counter once they were done with checking in.

    Since she’d never met Tina before, Jade had looked at her with a puzzled and confused look as she twirled the metal key to her room round her finger.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
