    Jade tugged Rian closer, bent her head and whispered the next verse of the song into her ear, How can you just walk away from me, when all I can do is watch you leave … Cos we’ve shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears …

    As they slowly circled the floor, staying by the edges at first, Rian bit on a quivering lower lip as Jade clutched her even closer. “Sing to me, Rian,” Jade whispered.

    After swallowing a sob, Rian sang softly, accompanying Teri, as the diminutive singer sang it, heart on her sleeve, Oh, there’s just an empty space … and nothing left here to remind me, just the memory of your face … take a look at me now, well there’s just an empty space … and you coming back to me is against all odds and that’s what I’ve got to face …

    Something shifted in the air around them. What had started earlier that evening with playful teasing while they’d chatted with the other women, and that continued into the dance earlier, had clearly become more serious, and they pulled apart slightly to stare into each other’s eyes.

    Rian mouthed, Turn around and see me cry …there’s so much I need to say to you … so many reasons why …

    Unconsciously, Jade pulled her by the waist even closer until their legs were entwined with each other, thighs pressing into the other’s center, as they moved smoothly in rhythm.

    Jade leaned forward until their foreheads touched and her lips were less than inch from Rian’s. She whispered, “I want to kiss you.”

    “Don’t,” Rian answered breathily. Maybe this was a mistake. I’ve taken this a step too far.

    She laid her hands on Jade’s chest and pushed off firmly. She said softly, “I wanted to tell you something earlier, but … I need to think about it.”  She spun away and left Jade abruptly.

    Minutes later Jade’s head was still spinning from the dance with Rian. I felt that. Felt that deep inside. And I’m pretty sure she did, too. I read something in her eyes. Undoubtedly she could read something in mine, too. Not sure what that is, yet, but….

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
