    Jade smiled back at her, “Go on, Ali. Don’t worry about me.” “You sure?” Ali asked uncertainly, and then turned to look for Natasha but saw that she’d started to exit the dance floor already. “I’m sure,” Jade answered with another smile. She was heading towards the temporary bar, feeling thirsty after all the dancing,

    Jade smiled back at her, “Go on, Ali. Don’t worry about me.”

    “You sure?” Ali asked uncertainly, and then turned to look for Natasha but saw that she’d started to exit the dance floor already.

    “I’m sure,” Jade answered with another smile.

    She was heading towards the temporary bar, feeling thirsty after all the dancing, and saw that the group of women she and Rian had been talking to before the dancing started were bopping away in a circle in one corner. She thought she’d seen Rian leave the room earlier, and had felt a twinge of sadness. But she hadn’t realized that Rian had returned to the room, having just refreshed herself in the ladies’.

    “Where do you think you’re going stud?” she heard someone call out from inside the circle.

    Jade laughed, “To quench my thirst!”

    “I think you owe somebody a dance first, though!” someone else called out, and before Jade could turn away she saw that one of them was dragging a protesting Rian.

    Jade smiled widely and closed the distance between them quickly.

    “I guess I do,” she said with a laugh as she grabbed hold of Rian’s hand and pulled her closer with a smirk.

    They finished the rest of the song smiling at each other, and Rian was about to lean over to tell Jade that there was something she wanted to say when Teri said as the last chords of the song faded away, “here’s a really slow one that we can end the evening with.”

    There was a howl of protest from the women, who were all dancing now.

    “Just let me know what you think of this one first before you all start whining,” Teri said mock-sternly. “We just finished tinkering with this, and this is the first time I’m playing it without the guys. So…” As the women laughed, the backing arrangements of the song played the moody initial chords of the song.

    Jade bit her lip and looked at Rian quickly. Their earlier mirth had disappeared quickly.

    Rian gave her a small smile and then snaked her arms around the neck of a suddenly nervous Jade as they swayed to the extended introduction of this arrangement of the song. They reached the edge of the dance floor.

      Caveats for the next chapters: there will be references to scenes and characters in “Let It Happen,” “Love Soul Heaven Hell”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “Nobis Pacem”. As a rule I try to write each chapter in a way that stands on its own, but you will understand the mindsets of the characters that appear in the chapter, or the backdrop of the scene, if you are at least somewhat aware of the other books. Apologies in advance if a scene or dialogue doesn’t seem to make sense. I will try to embed links to relevant segments of the above-mentioned books to help you “bounce” to them .

      As always, do let me know by pm, comment, or other means what you think. Helps me to know if what I’m writing is making passable sense, at least.
