Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast
Andrew Green smirked, “Yeah, all you need is money. And money is what I needed to make the most out of whatever my father was left with after being screwed. Over time, through gains I made in the financial markets, using schemes like the one you investigated, I managed to acquire quite a few more liens and rights to mine in areas where people thought gold existed.”
“The company you head is currently valued at $50 billion by capital markets, isn’t it?” Miller asked. “Seems like you’ve recovered from that situation quite nicely.”
He smiled thinly and countered, “I see you’ve kept tabs on that area even after you were done with that assignment, long ago, huh?”
Miller didn’t answer, and instead, stood and walked to the nearby wet bar where Mr. Green had fetched the scotch bottle from. She selected a bottle of sparkling water from the small fridge, clipped a lemon wedge to the lip of a water glass and dropped a few ice cubes into it.
As she walked back to her chair, carrying the water bottle and glass with ice in it, he sipped his scotch, gazing out into the peaceful seascape around them. Without looking at her he continued in a reflective voice, “Gold is a funny business, Ms. Miller. It’s hard to tell how much of it exists, even with all of the technology and what not people have deployed trying to track it. You’ll be surprised to know that even the most advanced countries would not know, at this moment, how much gold they actually hold.”
He turned to look at her with a bemused smile, “Do you know that 1954 was the last time there was a full audit of the gold in Fort Knox?”
“Ever since then, there hasn’t been any actual counting of gold bars the US holds. All that’s known is through estimates and paper work.”
He continued, “to give you an indication of how little we know of the actual stock of gold, if all the significant holders of gold were to ask for their gold bars back from where they are supposed to be stored, I’m willing to bet that not all of those bars could be produced. In fact, as the financial crisis was unfolding around 2007, a few countries tried to call their physical gold back, because the crisis was undermining confidence in their financial systems. But, since a lot of the official gold was held in bank vaults in the US and other western countries, they had to go to the banks. Venezuela, for example, asked for all of the 211 tons of bullion it possessed that was held by foreign banks.”

ALL STARS.
Thank you so much for this wonderful story, I cant wait for more from you.
Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.
All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.
Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
