Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

Andrew Green laughed a little, “The laws of economics, basic supply and demand, applied even then. It took years before the value of gold in the Cairo market returned to its former level.”

He finished his drink, set the tumbler down, and turned to look at Miller. “Now, the reason why his story is relevant to me and Peter … or was relevant to Peter … and to me still … is entirely traceable to something Peter’s grandfather found.”

“Peter’s grandfather and my father stumbled on a treasure map. It was amongst the trove of maps that Peter’s grandfather bought up from a market in Africa during one of their expeditions to that continent. Normally, their agreement was to jointly review all the maps and journals that each of them bought from these types of markets, so that they could examine and agree on leads they would pursue, and where they would allocate their joint capital to purchase or arrange for liens or rights to mines or land.”

“But Peter’s grandfather held this particular map back and only brought it up one night, after my father had had one too many to drink, after they’d returned to London from that particular trip. My father agreed not to put his money into the ventures Peter’s grandfather wanted to pursue, based on that map.   Peter’s grandfather promptly returned to Mali to arrange for liens and mining rights to some of the sites that were indicated in the map. In exchange, Peter’s grandfather said he would let my father keep all the proceeds from the next couple of liens in mining sites that he and my father had identified. Peter’s grandfather explained that he wouldn’t have enough capital to do both – that is, put money down for liens in Mali as well as for the new mining sites in other countries that they had jointly identified.”

He stood and indicated that they walk out to the deck. “I want to check on something here.”

Miller followed him out to the deck, remaining quiet as he walked around, apparently checking on the railing.

She observed him in silence. They were now relatively alone. There had been a couple of boats within eyesight earlier, but both had motored off.

He continued, “The map turned out to be a 300-year old map drawn by long-ago treasure hunters who had tried to map out Mansamusa’s mines, or a few of them, at least. I later found out that Peter’s grandfather had visited a tiny village just outside one of the markings in that map. And that he’d discovered the entrance to one of those ancient mines. So, after getting my father to agree not to co-finance this lead with him, and when he returned quickly to Mali, he arranged for those liens and rights so that they would be good for about 150 years or something unusual like that.”

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
