    (Tina) I work in development at Shaolin

    (Alice) oooh, movies! I love it!

    (Tina) and what about you all? Is this a usual Tuesday?

    (Dana) Ha, no! We’re all too old for this, it’s Bette’s birthday

    Tina looks over at Bette

    (Tina) Happy birthday

    (Bette) Thank you

    They share another long look, interrupted by the banter of Bette’s friends

    (Alice) Dana in what world are we old? you can act as old as you like but we are young, all of us! Well particularly Shane, but all of us!

    They chat and laugh over a couple more rounds of drinks, Bette noticing how quickly Tina fits in with the banter, and how intently she listens to the crazy stories and silly interactions of her friends. Bette and Tina regularly seem to find each others eyes throughout the night, and reluctantly break away when distracted by some part of the conversation. More trays of drinks are consumed and the laughter increases. Eventually the table is approached by an apologetic brunette.

    (Jess) Oh my God I’m so glad you’re still here, I’m the worst friend, you are so patient with me!

    (Tina smiles) It’s fine, really! Look I’ve made friends

    (Alice) Best friends!

    (Shane) Don’t mind Alice, she’s drunk. I’m Shane, this is Dana and Bette.

    (Tina) Guys this is Jess, she’s a lesbian!

    (Jess) Ah, I think Tina might be drunk too

    (Tina) Quite possibly

    The table all laugh.

    (Jess) OK let’s get you out of here. Thank you for taking care of her, let’s go missy.

    Jess takes her friend’s hand and Tina and the group happily exchange goodbyes.

    (Alice) Well we’re usually either here or at the Planet, so we’ll see you two around, and Tina I’ve got your number so we’ll sort something out.

    (Tina) Definitely

    (Jess) Yes that sounds great

    Tina and Bette meet eyes and smile goodbye at each other before Jess and Tina leave.

    (Alice) Fuck that was fun. Thank me later birthday girl.

    Alice grins as she subtlely pops something in her purse.

     

    Chapter 2

    The next day. Bette is driving and her cell rings.

    (Bette) Shane. You don’t often call, what’s up?
