    Chapters 3-4

    Tina smiles.

(Bette) I know your week is hectic, I’m glad you could make it.

(Tina) Well I heard the new Senator was going to be making an address, I didn’t want to miss it

(Bette) How did I do, do you think?

    (Tina) You’re a natural.

    They smile at each other.

(Bette) I need to stay maybe another hour. Shall we take advantage of actually being in the same place at the same time and have a drink afterwards?

(Tina) Sure. I’m about done though. Why don’t you come over when you’ve finished up?

    They share a long look.

    (Bette) Sure

Tina smiles at her and makes towards the exit.

Later, Tina’s apartment. Tina opens the door and they share a smile before Bette enters, following Tina further into the apartment.

(Tina) I was just making a tea, do you want one?

    (Bette) Sure, thanks

Tina fills the kettle at the sink and Bette leans against the bench watching her. After a moment Bette approaches her from behind and places her hand on Tina’s stomach while moving her hair to one side with her other hand and placing a firm kiss on her neck. Tina exhales sharply and Bette takes in the feel of Tina’s skin under her hand as her tshirt rises.

(Bette) God this feels good, to be able to touch you

    (Tina) I know

Bette continues placing kisses on Tina’s neck, as her hand continues to gently caress her stomach. After several moments Tina turns to face her, and Bette pulls her body against her own and kisses her deeply. They pull back and look at one another.

(Tina whispers) There are things to talk about. Implications

    Bette nods.

    (Bette) Later?

    (Tina smiles) OK

Tina takes hold of Bette’s hands and while maintaining eye contact with a faint smile, leads them towards the bedroom.

Later that evening, they lie in bed together, wrapped around each other as Bette holds Tina’s hand and strokes softly along her fingers.

(Tina) I think we need to talk about what we’re doing, or more specifically what we’re not doing

Bette looks over at her and sighs.

(Bette) Tina I know you can’t have a relationship with a Senator.

(Tina) And you can’t have a relationship with a journalist.

(Bette) So where does that leave us?

They both lie in silence for a moment, gently playing with each other’s fingers.

(Bette) Is there precedent for this?

(Tina) Politicians and journalists? Not that I can think of. Affairs maybe.

    (Bette) So, an affair then?

    Tina laughs.

They again silently take a moment to look at each other.

(Tina) I think if we discuss this too much then I’ll have to come to the conclusion that it’s a terrible idea to keep seeing you, in any capacity.

(Bette) So, don’t discuss it? Then we can keep seeing each other?

(Tina) I want to keep seeing you

    Bette smiles.

    (Bette) Well then, let’s.

Tina studies her for a moment.

(Tina) It would have to be casual. No relationship. No strings.

    (Bette) No strings.

    (Tina smiles) OK

    Bette smiles back at her.

    (Bette) OK

    1. Interesting dilemma. Would need to wise, experienced women of integrity to pull it off and have privacy free from the poparazzi meddling and haters.

Relationship wise, our ladies would have to set UNcrossible boundaries when it comes to avoiding even the hint of impropriety. So far, they are talking about the likely landmines.

Thing is tho, they are not gonna like hearing or seeing peeps hit on their soulmate while having to adhere to a”no strings attached” platonic ‘ship.

    2. There is an example of a US Senator married to a Pulitzer Prize winning columnist: Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Connie Shultz of Creators Syndicate. Married in 2004 and Brown won his senate seat in 2006. Shultz did resign the newspaper she wrote for during her husband’s Senate campaign. Shultz can be a columnist, just not represent that she is independent with respect to her reporting to her husband or any of his political endeavors. For she obviously is not. With respect to Bette and Tina? My recommendation for both is full disclosure to the public – if they are going to see each other, they see each other and make a simple announcement. “Because of our personal relationship, Senator Bette Porter and Columnist Tina Kinnard are no longer independent with respect to each other.” It is the secret connection which is unethical…. once made public, then the consumers of their work can make their own judgements with full knowledge of the situation. Tina would have to work out her own employment issues. If she is as good as she appears, well then some other news organization would scoop her up in a moment if the current one did not like the situation. And Bette is subject to the approval of her constituents but only every 6 years.

Fantastic story by the way….. crisp, unique and very adult. Both are equally human….

      • I wondered if there might be an example! Thanks for the info and taking the time to comment :)

I guess in terms of Bette and Tina’s situation here I imagined since Tina is so senior at the NYT that her impartiality being compromised as editor would call into question the paper generally, as she’s responsible for the editorial decisions. I imagine even if she left the paper (which she’d probably be reluctant to do so early in her reconnection with Bette) the same issue would arise elsewhere due to her seniority. But that’s very interesting to know how it has been handled in the real world!!

Thanks so much for reading and for your nice comments!
