    Chapters 8-12 – Conclusion

    ”Good morning,” Bette said.

”I can’t believe I slept so late,” Tina said. ”I was scared when you weren’t there.”

    ”Why would you be scared?”

”It’s stupid,” Tina shook her head as she stood. ”Never mind.”

”Tina, come, sit down,” Bette pulled a chair out for her. ”I’ll get you whatever you want to drink…juice? Coffee?”

”Juice would be great,” Tina slid into the chair.

    ”Breakfast?”

    ”Not really hungry.”

    ”So what’s up?” Bette asked.

”I woke up alone when I’m actually getting used to having someone there again,” Tina replied.

”I’m not going anywhere,” Bette said.

”That scares me a bit too,” Tina replied.

”Have you talked to anyone about…that?” Bette didn’t even know how to phrase her question.

”I’m still seeing a therapist,” Tina said. ”Once a month.”

    ”Does it help?”

”It helped at first,” Tina replied. ”To know that everything I was feeling was normal. But eventually, the letting go is on you.”

”Am I a part of your letting go?”

”Sometimes I wonder if it could really be this easy to be with someone new,” Tina started. ”Or if you’re an escape for me.”

”I don’t know how to tell the difference,” Bette replied. ”You put up a lot of barriers.”

”My defence mechanisms kicking in,” Tina explained. ”Being a workaholic, claiming a need for ‘alone’ time…”

”Propensity for sarcasm as an argumentative tool,” Bette added.

”Nicole hated that too,” Tina said with a smile. ”You would have liked her.”

”I’m sure I would have,” Bette replied.

”But you’re not like her in any other way,” Tina noted.

”I have to say I’m thankful you said that,” Bette said.

”I’m not replacing her with you, if that’s what you mean,” Tina said.

    ”It crossed my mind.”

”It’s hard for me…there’s some guilt…that I can move on so soon,” Tina said.

”Did someone question the fact that you’re with me? I know we didn’t spend all of last night side by side – did something happen?”

”I talked to Alice briefly yesterday afternoon,” Tina said.

”I thought she was okay with us…?”

”You’d think someone in Nicole’s family would be angry with me,” Tina said quietly.

”No one is forgetting her,” Bette replied. ”You’re not the only one who has to find a way to move on. You have to give them the same consideration they’re giving you.”
