Chapters 8-12 – Conclusion
”My brain knows that,” Tina replied. ”Maybe I want to fight with someone about it – to help with my own justification.”
”It’s the debater in you – you want to make your case,” Bette said. ”You know you’ve developed a good argument if you can convince someone else of its veracity.”
”You think like a lawyer,” Tina said.
”Lucky for me…”
”I wasn’t ready for you to show up in my life,” Tina said.
”People make plans and God laughs.”
”Isn’t that the truth,” Tina shook her head. She reached and placed her hand over Bette’s on the table top. ”Thanks for caring enough to make me have this conversation.”
”I care more than you think,” Bette replied.
Their talk was veering into dangerous territory. Tina rose to refill her juice glass and changed the topic with a question about the day ahead.
”Do you want to go for a walk along the boardwalk this morning?”
”Then maybe have lunch in Venice before we come back to the city?” Bette added.
”I’m going to get showered,” Tina said, tacit agreement implied in her non-response to Bette’s question. ”Join me?”
Tina might not be willing to talk about some of the feelings she was having, but she was more than happy to act on them.
Their morning concluded with a walk hand in hand along the Venice boardwalk, made all the more significant by the fact that Tina was able to exist in the moment rather than fret about her past.
Chapter 12
”I thought you were going home after our lunch in Venice,” Bette said.
”I changed my mind,” Tina replied. ”You got me all kinds of wet in the shower this morning with no…satisfying conclusion.”
”Standing in the shower is usually at least a little awkward,” Bette said. ”You’re the one who insisted we should get to Venice before the crowds descended.”
”This is much more comfortable than the shower,” Tina said.
”Did I mention I’m getting a lot less work done on weekends since we starting dating?” Bette asked.
”It can’t be making that much of a difference,” Tina scoffed, thinking Bette was exaggerating the situation.
”In fact, we had a partners’ meeting on Friday,” Bette started. ”In the last two months, I’ve averaged 11.4 fewer billable hours per week.”
