    Chapters 8-12 – Conclusion

”You explained it to one of your partners!”

”Not the ‘you and me’ part of the situation!” Bette replied. ”The fact that there’s a preponderance of evidence against the client.”

”What changed his mind? Listen, you know I need a clean conviction on this – I don’t want him to come back and say he was talked into something.”

”I am no longer the lawyer of record,” Bette replied. ”Steve looked at the evidence and asked straight up why he hadn’t taken the deal. No one thinks it should have ever gone to trial.”

”Can I assume the last offer is the one he’s willing to take?”

”One and the same,” Bette replied. ”I’ll text you Steve’s contact information and leave everything in your hands.”

”This really is great news,” Tina conceded. ”It’ll be good to wrap this one up.”

”And deliver it to your boss’s desk with a nice big bow,” Bette replied. ”Am I a good girlfriend or what?”

”I’m still getting used to that,” Tina said.

    ”Do you prefer lady friend?”

”It sounds like I’m an elderly gentleman at the nursing home who’s sharing tea time with one of the residents down the hall…”

    ”Partner?” Bette asked tentatively.

That was a step Tina wasn’t ready to take yet. Yes, they were dating. Yes, they were sleeping together. And as disconcerting as it was, she liked Bette. A lot. But to think of her as her partner?

The silence that followed Bette’s suggestion was very telling.

”Girlfriend it is,” Bette said. ”Listen, I have a busy morning. I’ll get that information over to you and you can contact Steve directly.”

They ended the call, but Tina felt badly with how their conversation concluded. Moving on was a process for her, but Bette was caught up in it as well.

”Is your offer still on the table?” Tina asked. She sat across from Bette and placed the linen napkin on her lap.

A late lunch, at a location that was proximal to both of their offices. Each passing day saw them acting less concerned with who saw them out together.

”I’ve made so many offers to you over the last several days, it’s hard to know which one you’re referencing,” Bette replied.

”The Mayor’s Banquet,” Tina replied. ”Would you like to go together?”
