Christmas with the Kennards- Chapter 4

Bette patiently waited as Tina joined her by her side.  She snaked her arm around Bette’s waist and placed her head on Bette’s shoulder to offer her support.

“Thank you for doing this for me,” Tina whispered.

Bette smiled as she plugged into the cord, waiting for the miraculous display she was certain she created.  Tina cringed as Bette’s mouth dropped in shock, the lights did not illuminate at all.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!”

“I hope there isn’t a bulb burnt out,” Shane said quickly quieting down when Bette glared at her.

    “I checked every single one!”

“I find that when stress occurs during the holiday,” Donna said, desperate to avoid Bette’s meltdown.  “It’s always best to sing.”

She cleared her throat and nudged James and Alice to begin singing with her.

“Deck the halls with boughs of holly,” Donna began as the group joined in quickly.  “Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.”

“’Tis the season to be jolly,” Dana belted out as she began to bite her lower lip and move her hips to a nonexistent beat.

    “Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.”

“Don we now our gay apparel,” Donna sang loudly.

“She said gay,” Dana snorted and then bent over holding onto Alice for support.

    “Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.”

“Take it away, Bette,” Donna urged as nobody spoke a word.

The pause was of significance, no lyrics being sung at all, and when the appropriate time had passed the group picked up from the silence as if Bette had sung right along with them.

    “Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.”

Tina grabbed Bette’s hand and squeezed it to show her support.

“I checked every bulb myself, Tina,” Bette said through gritted teeth.

“We can work on it tomorrow together.”

“No,” Bette said forcefully.  “If your mother wants lights that planes can land by in the thickest of fog, then she will certainly have her lights.”

Tina watched as Bette began to crawl up the ladder once more.  Her pants were dirty from rubbing against various parts of the house and outside decorations.

“I’m going inside,” Alice said as she helped Dana regain her composure.  “Dana can’t be the only one sauced on the nog.”

Bette didn’t notice as the group made their way back inside the house.  She looked at the various strands of lights, uncertain where to begin.

“Seriously,” Bette muttered to herself.  “Wolves would have been easier, they don’t decorate their dens.”

    1. I like that last comment from another story right? If not ignore this comment. Meanwhile Lu and I are going to do our Christmas shopping, you can say we are finally coming up for air, she is an animal, good thing I have all this energy for her. Give my regards to Sally.

    2. OMG….I thought of your story tonight as the family decorated Christmas cookies and we put on Christmas Vacation. Your story is cracking my just as much as that damn movie. Maybe you should have Bette kick the crap out of a plastic Santa and reindeer. Thank you for this story. pps

    3. yes, wolves would be easier as far as decorations but maybe you should read spumoni’s story LOL great update, it totally put me into christmas spirit, especially since i have to work the whole time

    4. Love this story and that last page was a corker. So funny. Someone asked why Tina is so sad, I think it is because Bette initially did not want to be there and that has colored the entire trip. And to have brought the gang to Carolina was not something she wanted to do. The wolf comment was hilarious. PPS

    6. That was incredibly funny and fun to read too, you are the queen of comedy my dear lovely Gamby and I am so excited about your story and all the moments we get to witness while the story unfold. Thank you so much for writing this story in a beautiful season like this and I wish you a very happy holiday. Love

    7. This reminds me why Dana is so missed. Absolutely hilarious, Gumby! Poor Bette will need more than spiked eggnog to make it through the Kennard family Christmas. I can’t wait for the presents…especially since Donna went “all out”! I’m envisioning a Christmas sweater embroidered with “If it doesn’t taste good, spit it out”.

    8. OK so I’m waiting for someone to enter a room and flip the magic switch for the lights to come on! lol Christmas at the kennards sounds just as intense as they are at my house. PPS
