Christmas with the Kennards- Chapter 4

    Chapter 4

Bette stood with her hands on her hips glaring at the crates that sat before her.  Each crate was labeled, in detail, with the exact contents inside.  Yet, despite having a clear inventory of decorations, Bette was unsure how to proceed.

“Lights are always a good place to start,” Alice chimed in as if reading her friend’s mind.

“Remind me again how we got paired together for this activity?”

“Because Donna wants some one-on-one time with Button.”  Bette couldn’t help but to smile at Alice’s use of Tina’s nickname.  “We’re a good team!”

    “What is everyone else doing?”

“Preparing for what I believe will be the bakeoff of the century,” Alice chuckled.  “Did you see all the ingredients?”

Alice bent down and used a hammer to pry open the first crate.

“I’m not seeing what I think I am seeing,” Bette said as she closed her eyes in fear.  “Please tell me that wasn’t…”

“A ball of tangled lights bigger than the Blob?”

“Exactly,” Bette said, sneaking a peak through opening one eye.

“I’ll could tell you that, but I’d be lying, and we’d still have to unravel these things.”

Alice threw a large ball of tangled lights in Bette’s direction, laughing as her friend’s quick reflexes saved her from being hit.

“Where are we supposed to put these?”

“On the house,” James answered carrying the ladder.   “I brought the ladder out for us to use.”

    “Us?”

“Every decorating phase has a Kennard supervising,” James informed them with a small smirk.  “I get outside lights.”

    “Why is that?”

“Because I put the lights away last year,” James continued.  “And Mom said, based on how I put them away, my punishment would be to be assigned to it again this year.”

“So you’re the one to thank,” Alice said as she nudged James with her elbow.

“Let’s get started,” Bette said removing a large plastic Santa from the crate.  “Where does this go?”

“Near the front porch,” James pointed.  “Just set it up and we’ll plug everything in when we’re done so we know where to put the extension cords.”

“I’ll do the lights!” Alice volunteered as she ran up the ladder, eager to begin her task.  “Hand me a big ball.”

    2. OMG….I thought of your story tonight as the family decorated Christmas cookies and we put on Christmas Vacation. Your story is cracking my just as much as that damn movie. Maybe you should have Bette kick the crap out of a plastic Santa and reindeer. Thank you for this story. pps

    3. yes, wolves would be easier as far as decorations but maybe you should read spumoni’s story LOL great update, it totally put me into christmas spirit, especially since i have to work the whole time

    4. Love this story and that last page was a corker. So funny. Someone asked why Tina is so sad, I think it is because Bette initially did not want to be there and that has colored the entire trip. And to have brought the gang to Carolina was not something she wanted to do. The wolf comment was hilarious. PPS

    6. That was incredibly funny and fun to read too, you are the queen of comedy my dear lovely Gamby and I am so excited about your story and all the moments we get to witness while the story unfold. Thank you so much for writing this story in a beautiful season like this and I wish you a very happy holiday. Love

    7. This reminds me why Dana is so missed. Absolutely hilarious, Gumby! Poor Bette will need more than spiked eggnog to make it through the Kennard family Christmas. I can’t wait for the presents…especially since Donna went “all out”! I’m envisioning a Christmas sweater embroidered with “If it doesn’t taste good, spit it out”.

    8. OK so I’m waiting for someone to enter a room and flip the magic switch for the lights to come on! lol Christmas at the kennards sounds just as intense as they are at my house. PPS
