Bette stared at the phone for another five minutes before turning off her desk lamp. What was the point? Even if she called Tina, what exactly was she going to say? It’s not like she had any epiphanies to reveal, no sudden flashes of brilliant understanding or an explanation for why she had betrayed the person she loved-would always love. How many more strained, maudlin apologies and stilted conversations could Tina bear? If Bette wasn’t bringing anything new to the table-new insight, new perspective, new information-then what was the point of calling?

The ringing phone startled her, and she picked it up before noticing it was her private line.

    “Bette Porter,” she said.

    “Did you call her?”

“I didn’t realize that you provided round the clock service,” Bette said.

“If you can work 24 hours a day, then we can all work 24 hours a day,” Alice said.

“Your dedication is admirable,” Bette offered, only half joking.

“So I guess that means you didn’t call her,” came the quiet reply.

    “No. I didn’t.”

    A long pause followed.

“Well. I should let you go,” Alice said.

“I don’t know what to tell her. I’ve tried I’m sorry. I’ve tried I miss you. I’ve tried I need you. I don’t have anything new to say.”

“How about, ‘I love you’? How about ‘I can’t live without you’? How about, ‘Please give me another chance to show you that you’re the love of my life and I won’t ever ***** up again’?” Alice’s frustration was apparent in her voice.

    “Why should she believe that?”

“Because she wants to. Because she’s looking for a reason to believe in you and trust you. Because she still loves you.”

    “Go ahead,” Bette said wearily.

    “Go ahead what?”

    “Go ahead and finish.”

    “What are you talking about?”

“You know, finish the sentence. ‘Because she loves you, even though you don’t deserve it,’” Bette said.

“Bette, you aren’t the only ***** up in the world. Everyone makes mistakes. Sure, you fucked up big. But that doesn’t mean that you don’t deserve to be loved. Do you think Tina expects you to be perfect? Do you think she ever expected that?”

“I expected it,” Bette said softly.

“Well, you must be pretty disappointed then, huh? All of this messy humanity you’ve been having has probably been a real eye opener.”

    “Yes. It has.”

“So maybe you tell her that, too,” Alice said gently.

    “Maybe.”

“Now go home will you? It’s late. And eat something for God’s sake. And”

    “I know. Call her.”
