    Tibette beginning… One way or another, the thought of the blonde would fight its way through the thick walls around Bette’s mind that she had erected in order to be able to go on every day.

    From all around, trembling hands had been reaching out to her.

     

    Abandoned… Bathed in their own blood, and obviously left there to die.

     

    She had taken a last look around with tears in her eyes, and had joined Pedro outside.

     

    “When did the epidemic start?” She had asked with a blank face.

     

    “It’s hard to tell… A month ago, maybe?” The man had answered, looking at Bette curiously, “You shouldn’t meddle with that, Professor. There is nothing we can do for them.”

     

    “And erase from my memory what I have just seen? There are dead people that we need to get out of here, people still alive that we can maybe save. Where are the doctors? The nurses? Who the hell is in charge of health in this country?” Bette had exclaimed, anger and frustration boiling over.

     

    Then, she had made up her mind, a decision that she had made the moment she had entered the church.

     

    “I’m staying.” She had declared, walking to the rear of the jeep to get her medical equipment and supplies.

     

    Pedro had been speechless. He had stared at her, both shocked and amazed by this obstinate yet brave woman who was ready to risk her life to try and save a few… A few who were already condemned anyway.

     

    Suddenly, something had clicked in him, and he had recalled the young man stepping into the Pasteur Institute those years ago, amazed by the chance he had been given to work alongside with people who contributed in their own way to the great mission of trying to cure the worst diseases of this world.

     

    And watching Bette resolutely unloading the big cases and boxes from the car, hope and faith had filled him again.

     

    He had joined her at the jeep and grabbed the other handle of a huge tin trunk that she was pulling with difficulty.

     

    “I’m staying too, Professor.” He had said, smiling at her.

    They had spent the next days burying dead bodies, burning clothes, bed sheets, and anything that could be contagious and transferable of the virus. Then they had organized the lazaretto, transforming the church into a huge hospital room, and installed the infected people in various sections, according to the progress of the disease.
