    Dante’s View

    “Everything okay?” Shane asked groggily.

“It will be. Hopefully,” Tina responded.

    “Tina…”

“Bette’s on her way back to LA. Will you pick her up from the airport, please?”

    “Sure.”

“She gets in at 9:15. This morning.”

    “Ugh.”

    “What time is it now?”

    “7:30.”

    “Oh God.”

Tina smiled…slightly. Imagining the grimace on Shane’s face.

    “Please, Shane.”

Shane heard the desperation in Tina’s voice. She opened her other eye and rolled onto her back.

    “What’s going on, Tina?”

    “I charged.”

    “What?”

“Nothing. Bette and I had an intense few days and the conversation last night was…a lot. And she’s going to need you today. She’s going to need all of you.”

    “I’ll be there.”

“James has all of the flight information. And please don’t tell her I sent you.”

    “Tina…”

“Please, Shane. You didn’t see the look in her eyes.”

“I’m not going to lie, Tina. But I won’t offer up any information either.”

    “Fair enough. Thank you.”

“What can I do for you?”

“Take her on a hike when she gets there. Al is going to need some time to get everything at the house in order.”

    “A hike? Fuck me.”

    “Please.”

“What if she doesn’t want to go on a hike?”

    “She will.”

    “Okay. Fine. Where?”

“Griffith Park to Dante’s Peak. Bette loves that view the best.”

Tina knew this was a big ask. Shane wasn’t a fan of nature. She definitely wasn’t a fan of a 2.5 mile morning hike. But Tina knew Shane would do anything for Bette. As a matter of fact, she was banking on that fact.

    “Anything else?” Shane surrendered.

“Take her straight home after the hike, please.”

    “Okay.”

    “Thanks, Shane.”

    “Tina?”

    Tina knew that tone.

    “I know, Shane. I know.”

Tina took a deep breath. Shane waited to see what she was going to say.

“Thank you for being there for Bette during this entire fucked up situation. I really appreciate it,” Tina said sweetly.

“You don’t have to thank me.”

“But I do. I’ve been such a selfish asshole these last few months. Hell, if I’m being honest, I’ve been a selfish asshole for a very long time.”

    “Tina…” Shane tried.

“It’s true, Shane. My therapist has helped me understand some things about myself and I’m working on getting my shit together. I really am.”
