Do What You Have to Do

Tina wondered when if ever the pain, which seemed to have taken residence in her chest, would end.  The pain had begun almost two years ago when she lost the woman who she knew was the love of her life.  The moment that she understood that the perfect love that they had shared had been shattered would forever be emblazoned in her mind.

Bette was exhausted; they had been through so much in a very short time.  Just that evening she had found the brunette who held her heart sobbing in a ball at the bottom of the large walk-in shower.  It had shocked her. Bette was her rock.

Tina searched for her through the gallery wondering if she should risk telling Bette that she had undergone insemination and was pregnant again.  Bette had begged her to try again to start their family as she gathered the broken woman in her arms.  She had told her that she wasn’t ready yet, to give her time.  She did not want Bette to experience the devastating pain that she knew was likely should she miscarry again.  Bette had been so strong and tender with her.  She had held her endlessly as she had cried out her pain and loss.

She wasn’t aware of much in the first days and weeks following the loss.  The little that got through were the soft tones that Bette used and her constant comforting arms.  It wasn’t until the haze began to lift that she realized that Bette had not cried or broken down. How she managed it though Tina was not sure, just looking in her eyes, Tina saw the raw pain there. They had lost the child that they had hoped planned and prayed for.  Then Bette had come under vicious attack for the very show that was opening that night.

She was determined to replace that pain with the joy she had witnessed when Bette first learned that she was to become a mother.  She would wait to tell her until after she passed the first trimester and was sure that this time she could deliver their child both literally and figuratively.

For the first time earlier this evening Bette had revealed her fragile emotional state.  Tina had taken charge ensuring that Bette was armored and ready to face the media circus they knew would await her.  For a few precious minutes she held her and promised to be there for her later and just allow her to fall apart.  I will take care of you she promised.  A seasoned warrior in her professional life Bette put on her game face and no one other than Tina could tell what a delicate state she had been in less than an hour before she faced the cameras.

    1. At the risk of sounding like an illiterate fool that was simply awesome. Those scenes were heartbreaking to watch and even after a few years are still gut wrenching.

    2. that was the most painful scene in the entire show nd u did it justice…in fact I hate that scene so much but when I saw u were writing it well I knew it was bound to be good…please be patient with writers…I have been off for weeks now becuz February is personally nightmare month and just yesterday I got rotten hayfever so I can barely see let alone have the brains to write anything….I’m loving season 4, and especially episode 8!!!! and I’m desperate to get well enuff to put something on paper….but u keep writing for us, pleaszzzzzzzzzz

    3. OMG, that finale scene was so powerful, I can barely stand watching it and when I watch it, I always ask myself, “why did you do it, Bette? why?!” (rhetorical question). But now it was the scene in my mind and your beautiful writing together and boy, I need valium now. Actually, at one point, I wanted to stop reading, because… well, you were doing a great job conveying a mix of painful feelings, but I couldn’t stop, was too captivated. Anyway, that was amazing.

    4. I always wondered how Tina managed to get home without blowing up, or breaking down. I was devastated when I watched it the first time (at the tail end of a TLW marathon), and I didn’t feel better ’til after the ultrasound. This was a really good post, kelika. Hope you do decide to post more of it at some point. Thanks
