    Eternal Flames-Chapter 10

Marisa leaned forward slightly, her voice soft but firm. “That’s the work, Bette. Letting people prove you wrong. And how did it make you feel. The fact you wanted to kiss her”

The words lodged somewhere deep inside her, as both invitation and warning. She nodded, looking away, afraid that if she held Marisa’s gaze too long, she might cry. “I told Tina I’d text her the details later. I guess that’s my escape hatch if I lose my nerve. And I lost my nerve from kissing her.  It’s terrifying”

Marisa’s pen made a quiet, deliberate tap against her notebook. “I get that.  But the want is there Bette.  And what’s the worst that could happen if you went through with it? Lunch with Tina, no escape hatch, no way out.”

Bette gave a humorless laugh. “You really want me to say it?”

“I want you to hear yourself say it,” Marisa replied.

Her fingers tightened around the watchband. “The worst? That I… open myself up and realize I can’t do it. That I let her down. That I ruin something that—” her voice faltered “—something that’s still there.”

Marisa’s eyes softened. “You’re not afraid Tina has moved on.”

Bette shook her head immediately. “No. I know she hasn’t. She’s been… steady. She’s still here, even when I’ve been distancing myself. That’s what scares me.”

    “Because?” Marisa prompted.

“Because it means the risk is real,” Bette said quietly. “If I mess this up, I lose her for good. Not because she left, but because I pushed too hard or pulled too far.”

Marisa nodded slowly. “So the real fear isn’t about her feelings—it’s about whether you can trust yourself not to run.”

Bette’s jaw tightened, eyes burning. “Exactly. If I think I’m about to be hurt, I will leave before the first crack shows. I’ve done it before.”

“And yet,” Marisa said, a small smile touching her lips, “you asked her to lunch. That tells me the part of you that wants connection is starting to win.”

Bette looked down, blinking away the sudden sting in her eyes. “You make it sound so simple.”

“It’s not simple,” Marisa said warmly. “But it is worth it. And from what I’ve heard, Tina’s already showing you she’s willing to meet you at your pace.”

    1. Happy to see an update.

I’m a little disappointed Bette cancelled the lunch but i understand her fear, especially after her lunch with her client who experienced almost the same and trusted her once friend and now husband only to be left again.

Tina, stay patient, Bette will get there but it takes time.
