Eternal Flames-Chapter 10
For a moment, Bette’s defenses softened. Her mind replayed Tina’s gentle patience, the way she always seemed to understand without pushing. It was almost enough to make her believe she could step over the line she’d drawn for herself.
Almost

Tina’s phone buzzed against the kitchen counter, but she didn’t look right away. She was in the middle of packing Carson’s lunch, slipping a note inside the paper bag that read Proud of you, kiddo. Only when she set the bag aside did she pick up the phone and see the text from Rachel.
Emma says Carson told her about the science project. Sounds like those two are already planning their Nobel Prize acceptance speeches.
Tina smiled, typing back quickly. He’s been talking about it for a week. I think they’re both convinced it’s going to change the world.
Rachel had been a steady presence since Tina moved back. In those first few weeks, she’d been one of the only people Tina had let in completely—about Carson, about the mess Darren had left, and especially about Bette.
Rachel knew the full history. She knew about the friendship that had been more than friendship, the years of silence, the complicated tangle of hope and hesitation that still tied Tina to Bette. She never pushed, never told Tina to “just move on.” Instead, she listened, asked the right questions, and somehow managed to leave Tina feeling lighter every time they talked.
When Bette had asked her to lunch earlier in the week, Tina had shared it with Rachel almost immediately. She’d been careful not to let her excitement run ahead of her, but Rachel’s smile over coffee had been impossible to ignore.
“This is a good sign,” Rachel had said, stirring sugar into her mug. “You’ve told me how skittish she can be. She wouldn’t ask if she didn’t want to see you.”
“I know,” Tina had replied softly. “I just… I need to let her come at her own pace. If I push, she’ll retreat. And I can’t lose the little progress we’ve made.”
Rachel had nodded. “So be patient. You’ve waited this long. A little longer won’t break you.”
Now, standing in her kitchen, Tina held onto that reminder. She wanted to believe this was progress. She wanted to believe that Bette wouldn’t have asked unless she truly wanted to be there.

Happy to see an update.
I’m a little disappointed Bette cancelled the lunch but i understand her fear, especially after her lunch with her client who experienced almost the same and trusted her once friend and now husband only to be left again.
Tina, stay patient, Bette will get there but it takes time.
