    Eternal Flames—Chapter 9

“Can I make you some tea?” Bette asked, her movements careful and controlled. “I have that Earl Grey tea you always liked”

Tina was taken aback by that. She was fully aware that Bette never liked that brand of tea. She found it odd she actually had some in her cabinet.  She wanted to question why but that may lead to diving into personal territory that Bette specifically said was off limits and Tina honestly didn’t really want to know.

“That would be nice. Thanks” Tina simply responded

As Bette moved around her kitchen, Tina allowed herself to imagine this as normal, routine. But she could see the tension in Bette’s shoulders, the way she kept busy to avoid prolonged eye contact. They were never awkward like this before Tina ruined everything.  She wished she hadn’t been so stupid but if she hadn’t of chosen the way she did she wouldn’t have had Carson.

“You’re thinking very seriously about something,” Bette observed, handing her a mug without letting their fingers touch.

“Just enjoying the moment. It’s been a good day.” Tina deflected

“It has been.” Bette paused, then said quietly, “Tina, can I ask you something?”

    “Anything.”

“Are you happy? Here in New York, I mean. Really happy?”

Tina considered the question carefully. “I’m getting there. The work is good, Carson’s thriving, and I’ve made a friend…”

“Rachel seems nice.” Bette says cutting her off.  Tina couldn’t help but hear a hint of jealousy in her tone but she quickly dismissed that notion

“She is. But to answer your question honestly – I’m happier than I’ve been in a long time, but not as happy as I could be.”

    “What would make you happier?”

Tina met her eyes. “You know what would make me happier.” ….And it was out before she could take it back

Bette looked away quickly. “I’m not ready for that conversation yet.”

“You asked” Tina said.  Her tone firm as she locked eyes with Bette who nods but remains silent “And that’s okay if you aren’t ready for that.  I meant what I said about taking things day by day.” Tina assured

“Thank you.” Bette replied. Her tone light

    “For what?”

“For being patient with me. For not pushing. For letting me figure this out at my own pace.”

    Comments

    1. Step by step, day for day Bette is letting Tina in. It’s lovely to read how Carson loves Bette and Bette loves him as well, so patient and with so much care.

Be patient Tina, don’t rush, you can see that giving Bette time and respecting her boundaries is doing, an invitation for lunch just the two of you, spending time at Bette’s home.

Well written story, i enjoy it very much!

    2. I love this fic, Tina and Bette are doing as well as can be expected. I hope Bette stays the course no matter how afraid she is of history repeating itself. Rachel seems nice, so I hope she doesn’t turn out to be a sheep in wolf’s clothing. I just read all 9 chapters today, and am looking forward to the next one.
