The door opened and Bette stood in the doorway. She was wearing jeans and a white blouse
“Hello there – come on in – Angie is doing some homework “
    “On a Saturday?”
    Tina stepped into the house
“She is trying to get it done because she is going to the movies with Jordi tonight “
“What are they going to see ?”
    “Some Marvel nonsense “
Tina moved to greet Bette with a hug but the brunette moved away in the split second before Tina made contact with her. She walked away into the main living room of the house.
Tina followed her into the living room. Bette wasn’t looking at her – she was looking at a sheet of paper
“How have you been?” Tina asked
    “Okay “
“I am sorry about the election – you were robbed “
Bette turned and shrugged “As Helena said when I was talking to her – our two countries are in the throw of collective insanity “
“She may well be right – what are you going to do next?”
Bette shrugged “Not decided – wish I knew “
    “You will find something “
    “I don’t know – I need some time out “
Tina nodded “Shall we go and see Angie?”
Bette looked at Tina and walked to the bottom of the stairs
“Angie – come downstairs please honey “
There was a pause “OKAY “came the shout in reply
Bette walked into the kitchen – Tina looked around anxiously at Bette who vanished but she soon was distracted by Angie coming down the stairs – she saw her mother and grinned
    “Mom! “
    “Hello pumpkin “
Angie raced down the stairs and flung herself at Tina – they hugged.
“What are you doing her? are you back?” Angie demanded
“I came to see you “Tina said looking at her daughter who looked as lovely as usual. She was wearing black track suit bottoms and a blue running shirt – the blue dye in her hair had gone – replaced by a purple streak.
“This is great – mom – did you know about this ?”
“I know about everything “Bette said standing in the door frame looking at how happy Angie was to see Tina.
    “How is school ?”
“Oh it is so much better than the other place – I like people and I am running for class President “
“I hope you run a better campaign than I did “Bette said
“All my classmates would have voted for you – they think you are cool “
“Well I guess that is something “Bette replied dryly
“Do you want a drink mom?”
“I wouldn’t mind something “Tina looked at Bette who looked at her for a few seconds and walked back into the kitchen again.
Alone in the kitchen Bette took hold of the sink and gripped it – this had been on her mind nearly every hour since Tina had told her that she was getting married again. It hurt – Bette didn’t think she could hurt any more than she had over the last year but she had been wrong. This pain was intense and she didn’t think it would ever leave her. But she was going to get through this – she would get through this because of Angie and she would get through this because as Shane told her many times – she was Bette Fucking Porter.
She took as long as she could to make herbal tea for Tina and a cold drink for Angie and carried them through to the living room. Tina was sitting on the sofa with Angie in her favourite seat facing the sofa. Bette put the drinks down with infinite care – she didn’t want to give away how much she was shaking or how much she wanted this to be over. She loved Tina and knew that she would always love her – but at the moment she didn’t really want to see her – it hurt too much.
Bette went back into the kitchen and brought herself a bottle of water. She sat down on the chair facing Angie – she couldn’t sit next to Tina at the moment.
“One of the reasons I have come over for a few days is so that we can tell you something “
Tina began looking at Bette who was looking at Angie and not at Tina
“Okay – right – what is it ?”
“Well you know that I am seeing someone “
    “Carey “Angie said
“Yes – she works on my show in Toronto “
    “Okay “
“Well – we get on very well. She is very good for me and I love her a lot “
Tina was looking at Angie but could also sense Bette’s silence
Angie looked from Tina to Bette who was doing her best not to show her feelings. She could hear Tina but it felt like she was in a tunnel a long way away. She knew the words and their meanings but she didn’t really want to register them.
“And she has asked me to marry her “Tina was struggling now – she had expected Bette to take more part in the discussion but the silence was unsettling her. Angie looked back at Tina
    “MARRY! “Angie exclaimed
“Yes – and I have said yes “
Angie went silent – she obviously was shocked at what her mother had told her. She looked at her momma B who was looking down at the water bottle in her hand. Tina looked at Bette who looked up finally
“Isn’t it great Angie “she said suddenly finding the energy to flash one of her beaming smiles
Angie was obviously confused – she looked at her mother and gave her one her own beaming smile.
“That’s fantastic mom “she said not sounding at all sure about how she was supposed to react. “When are you getting married?”
“We hope to get married really soon. I am in Toronto for 7 months a year but for the rest of the time we will get a place here so I can spend more time with you “
“That is great “ Angie said again “ Really cool “
“I cannot wait for you to meet Carey – you will just love her – she is looking forward to being your momma C “
“What?” Angie said looking at Bette and then back at Tina
    “It would be nice “
“I am not calling her momma C “Angie said “I have two mommas and two only “
“I – just thought “Tina began
“Mom “Angie looked to Bette appealing to her for help
“You don’t have to call her anything you do not want to Angie but she is going to be your step mom and the two of you will form your own relationship and you will treat her with the respect that you treat us and your various mad aunties “
“You will have to call her something if you come and live with us “
“No “Angie said “I live here “
“We don’t have to agree on anything at the moment do we Tina – you were just going to tell her – not make any long-term decisions “
“Don’t you want to come and stay with me honey ?”

    1. This was fantastic Ally! Alice is always so irritating, Shane the voice of reason, Tina the lost one. Bette always in pain about something. Loved the back and forth between Bette and Angie.

This is what is so great about fan fiction…you can write from so many different points of view, You can follow the shows story lines or go off on your own. In other words, you can write whatever you want!! :-)

      Thanks!

    2. Great story allyemmerson!

Love this bond between Angie and Bette! She is a really good kid! Bette is a amazing mother!

Sometimes i think Tina has lost her mind instead of finding herself. She knew how hurt Bette is and still she does what she wants. Has she fucking lost her mind that Angie should call her new woman momma C!!!!

I love Tina but sometimes i don’t understand or like her.

    3. In my mind, this does reflect some of the character flaws in both Bette and Tina. Bette can be all consuming taking up a lot of space. She can be egocentric and narcissistic to the extent of not seeing things and changes in Tina. Bette lack self confidence in her parenting abilities and relationship skills. But Bette loves Tina more than life itself and if asked Bette would do almost anything Tina asked.

On the other hand, Tina has always been one to bottle up her emotions and anger inside. She has always been weak in confronting and communicating to Bette the problems or issues which are not to her liking. Traditionally, instead of calling Bette on her misbehaviors and those things which irritates her, she withdraws or flees the scene rather than confronting the situation and asking for change. She pulls inward instead of engaging Bette into conversation and discussion. This builds anger within her until at some point it explodes and she looks elsewhere for a better relationship or relief from her own built up anger.

The most poignant line is this story is when Shane tells Tina” “I know why you left and I do get that Bette can just take up a lot of a room – but she has been like that for over 20 years Tina. And I remember you once telling me that people treat us the way that we let them. Bette was in control because you let her be in control…”

I have always believed that both a capable of change their own behaviors. But before they can do that, they have to see in their own mind’s eye the harm that it is causing the relationship. They have to trust the other to be able to hear what the problem is and be willing to negotiate a solution. Then it takes two people to work through the resolution. No one is always right and no one is always wrong. These are the thing I saw developing in Season 6 which gave me great hope for the Bette and Tina relationship. These are things which according to the writers of Gen Q, they lost those changes somewhere in the ten intervening years.

Personally in this story, I think Tina is not seeing the whole picture very well. I also think that she would have had a better plan on talking to Angie than she had. She would be more cognizant of Bette’s feeling and not assumed Bette was going to give her the support she thought she should have. She either did not believe Alice and Shane that Bette was still in pain or she choose to ignore it. By the response Bette gave her greeting her at the door, she should have sensed that this was not going to be a good day. But she plowed ahead anyway. And with Bette finally just asking her to leave after being summarily left in the living room by Angie, she could not have a good feeling about this.

I think this chapter needs a continuation…..Tina needs to do some soul searching about what happened in telling Angie about the upcoming marriage and what Shane and Alice said to her about Bette.

Personally, I think Bette is asking for trouble if she gets back together with Felicity, after all her husband attacked her and Angie. How could Angie (or Bette) respond this way after the attack and problems it caused for her mother? What am I missing here?

This is excellent writing. Its a good storyline. But do a follow up chapter and see where this goes.

    4. Sweet. I think you hit the nail on the head with Bette sort of resigned to the fact that something about them just doesn’t work? Not many other ways to explain the BS they put each other through. I really hate what the show has done to them.

    5. Thank you for this story. I felt Bette’s pain both onscreen and in your story so vividly. I hope she finds happiness and peace because she’s suffered enough.

I love how you portrayed Alice and Shane talking to Tina. Very in character.

I kind of support Tina’s wish to go find herself even if it meant leaving Bette, but I refuse to accept the fact that she didn’t show up at Kit’s funeral. It’s not the Tina we know and love.
