    Heart-Shaped Box, Ch. 40

She must really care about all of you, Brandy observed, laying a hand on Tims arm.

Bette smiled. Something tells me she does.

Something also tells me that we couldnt ask for a better friend than Marina, Shane added.

This is such a touching Hallmark moment. Barf, Alice said.

Oh, come on now, Alice, Im sure you were touched, too, Ivan prodded her gently.

Alice laughed. All right, all right. It was pretty cool. Its also nice to know I have such great friends.

Kit laid a hand on her shoulder. Not just friends. Family.

Laras eyes were misting. You guys, thats true. Youre all Ive got. I dont think Id still be going on if it werent for all of you. I might have just given up.

Awww. Group hug! Alice screamed, grabbing everyone close to her.

    Bette groaned. Not again.

A beeping sound was heard suddenly. Shane pulled out her cell phone and glanced at it. Ignoring the chatter of everyone around her, she flipped open her phone and opened the text message.

    Assistant Officer *****–

Weve got a situation down here at the hotel. Your assistance is needed immediately. Suspect is armed and dangerous, so be prepared. Now get your ***** over here!

    -Officer H.

Shane smiled to herself and flipped the phone shut. Well, you guys, I have to run. Ive got something to do.

Alice looked at her knowingly. Ill bet you do.

Shane stuck out a tongue at her. Can it, Enrique.

As she told everyone goodbye, and tracked down Marina to tell her she was leaving, Shane headed for the door. Before leaving, she turned around. Hey, Al?

    Alice looked up quickly. Yeah?

Shane smiled softly. Congratulations to you and Dana.

    Smiling in return, Alice nodded.

Shanes smiled turned wicked. Hey, but if you guys ever decide you need a little fun, you know where Im at.

Everyone burst out laughing as Dana blushed and buried her face in Alices shoulder.

And hey, Shane added. Bubbas always ready, too.

I bet this is another one of those things were better off not knowing about, Tina said to Bette quietly.
