Heart-Shaped Box, Ch. 40
This sort of explains a lot, Dana began. This morning, after you, um, left, Alice, she continued, glancing at her girlfriend and blushing slightly. Something strange happened. I got this delivery. It was a brand-new, top of the line, extremely expensive tennis racket that had my name engraved on the handle. When I looked in the box, I found this note. She pulled a crumpled typed sheet of paper from her pocket, and began to read aloud:
Dana,
Dont be afraid to be yourself and be proud of it. Dont be afraid to let yourself go and fall in love, either. Youll make the right choice. Follow your heart. You are a joy to be around, and I hope you find the same joy for yourself.
Love,
…Youll figure it out eventually.
Everyone sat in a hushed silence, staring at one another. So who is it? Alice burst out.
Whos left? Brandy asked, looking around the group.
Tim began silently counting off names in his head. Everyones accounted for, right? Except for Jenny, obviously, because she was gone.
Jenny smiled at him softly, and he returned that smile.
Wait, hold on, Kit interrupted. Theres somebody were missing.
Ivan nodded. Youre right. Shane nodded at him in agreement.
But who? asked Lara.
Bette and Tina both shrugged. Alice was struggling, her mind working so hard she was almost beginning to sweat.
Marina sidled up to the table and set down fresh mugs of coffee and pastries for everyone. Ill be back in a moment, everyone. I have another call to make.
Hey, Tim said softly, starting to realize something.
Marina glanced back at them. Oh, and whatever it is all of you are working so hard to try and figure out? Youll figure it out eventually, she told them with a knowing smile and a wink, then glided away quickly.
Marina! they all shouted together.
I cant believe we never figured it out, Dana said in disbelief, shaking her head.
Jenny, did you know anything about it? Tina asked, stroking Lucys soft ears.
No, not a thing. Marina never mentioned a word. I had no idea what was going on until you guys started explaining, Jenny admitted.
