    Helena and Dylan

“Why didn’t you?” Helena was finally starting to realize the extreme damage of her actions. Dylan was right. It was a pattern of behavior that she’d gotten away with for years. If only someone had stopped her perhaps she would not be in this position now.

“Like most victims of sexual assault I just wanted to forget it and move on with my life. I didn’t think I would ever see you again and I refused any overseas assignments to make sure but still here we are.”

“Dylan I know you don’t want to hear this, but I’ve changed or at least I’m trying to change. I know I can’t make amends and I understand if you want nothing to do with me but please believe that I am sorry.”

    ”It doesn’t matter.”

”I hope I haven’t ruined your evening. If it will make you more comfortable I’ll make my excuses. I’m sure Bette just asked me to join you all as a courtesy anyway.”

“It’s up to you if you want to stay or not. It makes no difference to me as long as we drop this conversation. I only have a couple more days in Los Angeles to spend with friends and I’m going to enjoy myself. I wish you well with your endeavors Helena. I know Winnie had hoped that we could get beyond this and become friends and perhaps work together in New York but I’m afraid that isn’t possible for me. I can’t be friends with someone I don’t trust or respect and  there is nothing that will change my mind. Peggy and Bette both seem to support you and Winnie has a lot of faith in you. I hope you are serious about changing your ways and turning your life around for their sake. I would hate to see you disappoint them or break your mother’s heart once again.”

They rode the rest of the way in silence. When they arrived at Bette’s house in West Hollywood there was no evidence of the animosity buried just under the surface. Helena knew it was more than she deserved and was appreciative that  Dylan would tolerate her presence.

Bette greeted them at the door with hugs and kisses and gave them the tour of her home. They were all very impressed with the beauty of the architecture and Bette’s artistic touches throughout. Val received acclaim for her amazing job on the mural in the baby’s room. After dinner they headed to the Planet. Val and Leigh rode in the limo with Winnie and Helena. Sam and Dylan rode with Bette in her Saab.
