How the WeHo West Was Won – Chapter 3
Previously
Bette untied her horse and took the reigns in her hands, she put her shining black boot into the stirrup and launched herself gracefully into the saddle, she turned Night’s head to the east, clicked her spurs into the muscled flanks and galloped off leaving a dusty trail. Tina watched the figure she knew so intimately recede from view and not for the first time wondered if she had made a wise decision. Tina turned her back on the small cloud of dust and returned to her classroom. When she took her customary place in front of her desk she could have sworn she detected the departed Sheriff’s unique scent.
Bette slowed her pace when she got into town, her experienced eyes took in the familiar sights, she nodded her head to those who greeted her and made a mental note of those who didn’t since they usually had something to hide. The sun was now blazing bright in the sky and for the moment things seemed to be under control. The Sheriff upon reaching her domain dismounted and tied Night to the well-worn post.
Bette purposefully strode through to doors to find her deputies at their desks in their usual positions. Tim, neatly attired, was sitting up straight in his chair, alert and ready to jump into action at a moment’s notice and the disheveled Shane was slouched in the chair with hat dipped low over the eyes and feet up on the desk. Buster, the jail house mascot of indeterminate breed, bounded with tale wagging to greet the master while Ginger, the orange tabby mouser, leisurely washed herself on the small windowsill.
“Afternoon Sheriff did you just come from meeting with the Mayor?”
“Tim” replied Bette in a steely tone that sent the dog under Shane’s desk and Ginger off the ledge and out into the dusty street. “You wouldn’t receive notice of a meeting at the Mayor’s office that required my attendance and neglect to tell me about it again would you?”
“No ma’am” replied a now terrified Tim.
“Then why did you just ask me if I’ve been meeting with the Mayor?”
“Your boots.”
“My boots?” asked an incredulous Bette.
