How the WeHo West Was Won – Chapter 3

“Ma’am please accept my sincerest apology, I had no idea you would be here (what are you doing in Alice’s office thought Bette) I was looking for Miss Pieszecki.”

“Yes, I could tell, is that how you usually start your conversations with my reporter?”

    “No ma’am.”

“Please Sheriff Porter don’t call me ma’am, I hate being called ma’am.”

“Well then Mrs. Peabody do you mind if I ask when Miss Pieszecki became your reporter and where I can find her?” (Bette could only remain apologetic for about 30 seconds.)

“Sheriff do you mind if I ask why you believe malicious rumors and are investigating my daughter and if you have a personal vendetta against her?”

“Ma’am, I don’t have a vendetta against your daughter, I’m just doing my job.”

“I see,” replied Mrs. Peabody “then we have a lot in common, I’m just doing my job as well. I recently acquired this little backwater newspaper and I sent off my newest employees in search of celebratory libation and victuals. Would you care to stay and join us?”

    Touche’ thought the Sheriff.

“I appreciate your magnanimous offer Mrs. Peabody, but I’m afraid I have work to do. Another time perhaps?” Bette gave Mrs. Peabody one of her 1,000 star smiles. “Would you please tell Alice I was looking for her and would appreciate it if she paid me a visit?”

Mrs. Peabody couldn’t help but be taken in by the smile and intelligent twinkle in the Sheriff’s eyes. “I’ll be sure to convey your message Sheriff.”

Bette replaced her hat and walked out the door with her dignity intact. The fact that she found she liked and respected the elder Peabody did not change her opinion of the younger.

The elder Peabody’s instinct told her that daughter Helena was indeed up to something that could harm the esteemed reputation of her family and that was the real reason for her trip out west. Peggy needed as much information as she could get about all the players involved and was particularly intrigued by the unusual Sheriff and wanted to know everything about her. She knew that if she had a chance of freeing her daughter if someone with Bette’s reputation brought her to justice she would need some serious leverage and practically nobody knew more about the truth, innuendo and lies about the town and its surrounding inhabitants for hundreds of miles than Alice Pieszecki.
