How the WeHo West Was Won – Chapter 3

“Can I get you something from the bar Sheriff P?”

“No thanks Marina, I best not imbibe while I’m working, we don’t want to give the Right Reverend Fairbanks anything untoward to hold against me,” she smiled in reply. “I’ve decided to have some folks over after church on Sunday. Care to join us?”

“Do I have to attend church first?” asked Marina.

“Do you really need to hear me say it?”

“No, I don’t.” Marina paused a few seconds for dramatic effect before replying. “Alright, I’ll be there.”

Once again, Bette set out to leave the saloon when she heard Ivan calling her name. She stopped and turned and in moments Ivan was by her side placing her riffle in her hands.

“I’m afraid you forgot it in your rush this morning.” “I didn’t forget anything Ivan, but thanks, I appreciate your bringing it to town for me.”

Ivan was momentarily confused until he recalled Tina’s dislike of guns. He weakly smiled and then went back to the pile of splintered wood he was sorting through.

The first step back into the bright sun caused the Sheriff’s eyes to water, as they had grown so accustomed to the dim light of the saloon. The Sheriff then turned to her right and starting walking to her next order of business. The sight of the Sheriff walking instead of riding down the street was not something people were used to. Bette was tall for a woman even without the heels of her boots and a cowboy hat on her head, but she used riding horseback to extend the illusion of her height and power, the Sheriff knew the value of intimidation and awe and cultivated whichever was necessary to maintain law and order.

Upon reaching her desired destination the Sheriff burst through the door saying “Alice I don’t know what the ***** you were thinking, Lord help you if you are enjoying making my life a living ***** on purpose, I’ll rip” Bette stopped mid beratement when instead of finding Alice and her type setter and editor Mark tete-a-tete over a story she encountered Peggy Peabody, resplendent in the latest fashion behind Alice’s desk. Bette took off her hat and immediately started backtracking.
