I Need My Best Friend – Part 16
Bette wanted to let Tina sleep so she got up and went into the kitchen. After putting coffee on she cleaned up the mess they had left last night, silently wishing she could clean up the other mess from last night as easily. She poured her coffee and sat on the couch watching the day begin. Everything was fresh and new and she hoped the day would afford them a fresh start.
She was refilling her coffee when she heard the shuffle of Tina’s fuzzy slippers.
‘Hey.’
‘Good morning T, coffee?’
‘Please.’
‘Let’s sit in here.’
They were seated on opposite ends of the sofa, each leaning against the arm so they could face each other.
‘How did you sleep?’
‘Like I was in a coma, how long have you been up? Couldn’t you sleep?’
‘I slept fine; I got up so I wouldn’t wake you. Actually I watched you sleep for a while then I got up.’
‘What have you been doing?’
‘Drinking coffee and thinking.’
‘About last night?’
‘That and everything else we’ve been through.’
‘Did you figure anything out?’
Bette laughed and said, ‘world peace might be easier.’
‘Isn’t that the truth? Really, what are you thinking.’
‘Well, maybe I’m oversimplifying, but I’m sure of two things. I’m sure that we still love each other, or we wouldn’t keep trying so hard, and I’m sure that it’s our fear that is standing in our way. So I’ve been thinking about what I’m most afraid of and thought that if you would like to talk, at some point today, maybe you could tell me what you’re most afraid of.’
‘Wow, you’ve been busy, and so early in the morning!’
‘If you don’t want to talk that’s all right. We can do whatever you want. I’m going to get some juice, want some?’
‘Sure.’
All Bette wanted was for Tina to meet her halfway and it didn’t look like that was going to happen. She felt the tears start and really didn’t want Tina to see.
Without looking she knew Tina had followed her into the kitchen.
‘Bette what’s wrong?’

Wow that was amazing. Sorry you weren’t feeling well. Glad to see you are feeling better.
Bette, a defeatist? Well, I guess everyone has their breaking point. I just hope she doesn’t do anything rash or premature ’cause my heart is still waiting for Tina’s fears to dissipate enough for her to realize that she and Bette deserve a second chance. Thanks for the update. I hope you feel better soon.
Get well soon. Tina needs to realize she does deserve Bette and let them both have a second chance.
Wow this really good, and amazing story, Bette and Tina hava a difficult time to figure out how they have to make their relationship back to normal and how important of their life. I hope they work it out as well. Please write more. Love it. “I hope you get better soon”. Good to see you writing back again, thank you.!
That conversation was very real.. true to life. My heart is broken at the thought of Bette leaving..
I miss you and your stories! welcome back! I love your stories because you didn’t make it overtly melodramatic. Your take on Bette is really good and even on Tina’s. I hope you feel better soon.. We’ll just see how it plays out hmm..?
So glad to have you back–wonderful chapter.
I don’t see Bette as a defeatist here (no offense seven) I think she just loves Tina so much that she is respecting her (possible) choice…Bette committed the ultimate marital sin and to ask Tina to recommit and trust again could be impossible…I really love how you have kept this so realistic, my opinion anyway…these guys do love each other but sometimes love isn’t enough…on that note I really do hope they work it out and get back together but thanks for keeping it real…nice tribute to sea! Bravo!!!
I’ve been missing this like crazy. Good to see you back. Well done!
I could read what you write all day, hoping love will keep these two together.
This was a beautiful chapter…the emotions, the processing, the dialogue…all very real. I’ve said it before, I love this story. Your writing style is so easy to read.
Oh, and thanks for the mention of my story…but let’s not make your Bette and Tina wait 15 years before they can be together again!! Please!! :)
Missed your story tremendously, you do such an amazing job writing it. I will be sad when it’s completed…surely hope B&T lovers like myself, will be happy with the ending.
my god, they’re a torturous pair; kit’s right…let it play itself out bette don’t precipitate a premature end…brilliant writing.
