I Need My Best Friend – Part 16
‘I just want us to try, don’t you want that anymore?’
‘I wasn’t brushing you off Bette; I was just surprised you got up thinking about all of this. I’m hardly awake.’
‘I’m sorry I should have at least let you finish your coffee.’
Tina put her arms around Bette, ‘I do love you Bette and you’re right I am afraid.’
Bette kissed the top of Tina’s head; ‘we can talk about this later, how about breakfast?’
‘What if I make breakfast while you shower and dress, after we eat I’ll shower and then we’ll get things together and have our picnic. We can talk then, all right?’
* * * * *
They had packed up the picnic basket, added a blanket and a few books and magazines just in case the talking hit a lull. They walked, hand in hand until they found the perfect spot.
‘How about this T?’
‘Quiet, private, great view, works for me!’
They got everything set up and then silence. There they sat, on opposite sides of the blanket, just staring at each other in silence.
Bette shook her head, ‘this is ridiculous,’ stood up, walked over to Tina and held out her hand. Tina took Bette’s hand and pulled herself up. Bette pulled Tina into an embrace and felt her stiffen.
‘Relax T.’
‘Bette?’
‘Close your eyes for just a moment.’
She began to talk, very softly to Tina and could feel her begin to relax in her arms.
‘We love each other T, that isn’t going to change no matter what we decide. I know you don’t trust me, but at least believe me when I say you can ask me anything and I promise to tell you the truth. Please just meet me half way.’
Pulling away just enough to look at Tina, ‘please?’
Smiling through her tears Tina just nodded and held Bette’s hand.
‘Tell me about what you figured out this morning.’
They sat down, this time next to each other and each took a deep breath.
‘Well, I believe we still love each other, I know I’m still in love with you and I think our fears are keeping us from moving forward. It seems like each time we make a little progress we manage to take a few steps back. I know this is all part of the process, but I think it’s time we discussed our fears. We really haven’t talked about what we’re afraid of.’

Wow that was amazing. Sorry you weren’t feeling well. Glad to see you are feeling better.
Bette, a defeatist? Well, I guess everyone has their breaking point. I just hope she doesn’t do anything rash or premature ’cause my heart is still waiting for Tina’s fears to dissipate enough for her to realize that she and Bette deserve a second chance. Thanks for the update. I hope you feel better soon.
Get well soon. Tina needs to realize she does deserve Bette and let them both have a second chance.
Wow this really good, and amazing story, Bette and Tina hava a difficult time to figure out how they have to make their relationship back to normal and how important of their life. I hope they work it out as well. Please write more. Love it. “I hope you get better soon”. Good to see you writing back again, thank you.!
That conversation was very real.. true to life. My heart is broken at the thought of Bette leaving..
I miss you and your stories! welcome back! I love your stories because you didn’t make it overtly melodramatic. Your take on Bette is really good and even on Tina’s. I hope you feel better soon.. We’ll just see how it plays out hmm..?
So glad to have you back–wonderful chapter.
I don’t see Bette as a defeatist here (no offense seven) I think she just loves Tina so much that she is respecting her (possible) choice…Bette committed the ultimate marital sin and to ask Tina to recommit and trust again could be impossible…I really love how you have kept this so realistic, my opinion anyway…these guys do love each other but sometimes love isn’t enough…on that note I really do hope they work it out and get back together but thanks for keeping it real…nice tribute to sea! Bravo!!!
I’ve been missing this like crazy. Good to see you back. Well done!
I could read what you write all day, hoping love will keep these two together.
This was a beautiful chapter…the emotions, the processing, the dialogue…all very real. I’ve said it before, I love this story. Your writing style is so easy to read.
Oh, and thanks for the mention of my story…but let’s not make your Bette and Tina wait 15 years before they can be together again!! Please!! :)
Missed your story tremendously, you do such an amazing job writing it. I will be sad when it’s completed…surely hope B&T lovers like myself, will be happy with the ending.
my god, they’re a torturous pair; kit’s right…let it play itself out bette don’t precipitate a premature end…brilliant writing.
