    I Need My Best Friend – Part 9

    ‘You shouldn’t have to sleep on the couch.’

    ‘It’s all right, just wake me up in time to get ready.’

    * * * * *

    Neither one slept much, they each heard the other wandering around in the night, neither able to go to the other.  Bette knew at one point Tina went in their bedroom for a while.  She wondered what she was doing and if she should check on her, but couldn’t bring herself to go in there.  Tina had heard Bette go out by the pool and watched her for a while from the window.  It took all she had not to go to Bette when she realized she was crying.  Finally they had each fallen asleep.

    * * * * *

    After Tina had showered she went to wake Bette.  She had always loved to watch Bette sleep.  The fa&#231ade gone, her features softened, all Tina wanted was to crawl under the covers with Bette and wish all this away.  She hadn’t realized she was sitting beside Bette, brushing her hair away from her face until Bette spoke.

    ‘Hey.’

    Tina started to stand but Bette stopped her.

    ‘Not yet.’

    ‘I should finish getting ready.’

    ‘Can’t we just take a minute?  This is nice.’

    ‘I got a little lost in my thoughts, I’m sorry.’

    ‘I’m not.  You were so restless last night I was worried about you.’

    ‘We were both restless.’

    ‘Sorry if I woke you.’

    ‘Are you okay?’

    ‘Just anxious about today.’

    ‘Me too, you should get ready.’

    They finished getting ready, neither speaking until they were about to walk out the door.

    ‘Bette?’

    ‘Hmm?’

    Tina stepped closer to Bette, put her arms around her and pulled her close.

    ‘No matter what happens I want you to know I do love you.’

    Bette couldn’t speak she just held on and tried to commit everything about this moment to memory.

    ‘T, we should go, you’ll be late.’  She turned to head out the door before Tina could see she was about to cry.

    As they parked Bette told Tina she would be in the coffee shop across the street.  Tina stopped after she entered the lobby and watched Bette as she walked away.  She had left Bette and had never considered the possibility that Bette might not want her back, until last night.  And then this morning when Bette had no response when she reached out to her she could only wonder if Bette was giving up on her, on them.

    1. I am just getting caught up with this story its so good. I can understand Tina’s struggle and I know she will overcome the anger when she realizes her love outweighs the anger. GREAT story

    2. Very good, you had me hoping all the way, that Tina would budge just a little. Bette is on her way and has accepted her mistakes and is taking on the responsibility to recetify them. I will be waiting for the next chapter. I hope that it won;t be too long. Thanks

    3. One says that they are sorry, making attempts to change, showing remores, showing how much love they have for the one they love. Is all one needs to show. Tina wow she has to deal with that angier or she will lose out. Catch the next chapter.

    4. I agree with abouttime. Bette has apologized enough and I’m sure it was difficult for her to just walk out but it had to be done. No more dancing around the guilt and the same issues. Its time to move forward and begin the healing process. Excellent chapter, asalways!

    5. Bette was ready to face some of her issues while Tina isn’t. I do agree that in order for it to work, both parties have to be ready. Time helps a lot though in that duration, it’ll be like hell.

    6. I found this a very emotionally powerful chapter and echo everyone’s comments regarding Bette’s willingness and Tina’s cowardice.

      Thanks for posting!
