The Island – I want her back

“What do you mean? She was wonderful, amazing. I’m the one who fucked it up.”

“Yes, well, she does have a heart of gold. She is the kindest and most generous person I have ever met but trying to get any information about her is worse than milking a rattlesnake. She’s too damn private. It annoys the hell out of us.” Phyllis says in her perfect Texas drawl.

“You know, I still know nothing about her past, how she ended up here. We knew each other in New York, and next thing, she’s consorting with Joyce and I’m suddenly living on a tropical island. Not that I mind, of course, Joyce and I would have died of heart attacks in less than five years at the stress levels we were living with. Bette probably saved our droopy ole asses. Oh, and there’s something really amazing in the air here because we two have never been so horny. We’re like a couple of teenagers.” Phyllis giggles like a little schoolgirl. Tina blushes with embarrassment.

“oookay” She tries to smile. Phyllis is definitely in need of some adult conversation and some boundaries.

“I’ll drop you off. I need to pick up the girls then we’re off for two weeks.”

    “You’re leaving? Where?”

“It’s the grand opening of our new shelter in fabulous New York City. We’ve been bugging Bette for years to open a shelter there. And finally, she did it. She started the project ten months ago and we’re ready to launch. Yeehaw! I’m doing some heavy shopping while we’re there. I’m getting some of that Botox and maybe a Swedish massage. And pizza. Lots and lots of New York pizza. God, I can’t wait to put on a real dress, something fancy, and sexy…Oh and wear my cowboy boots again. ” Phyllis is glowing with excitement.

    “Is Bette going too?”

“Not yet. She’ll be there for the opening. Right now, she’s too busy painting. Or so she says. She’s been hiding on the island for weeks.” Phyllis rolls her eyes in disbelief.

She walks around the counter and out into the hot sun, pulling Tina with her. Tina furrows her brow. That’s what Bette was doing in New York. She shuts her eyes tight to keep the guilty tears from escaping.

After locking the office and securing their bags they travel along the beautiful Caribbean Sea in the prestigious and highly decorated party boat. There are streamers and pasted flowers along the rails. Different color banners are waving in the wind. She can only imagine the boat at full capacity. The well stocked bar, the sexy beat of Reggae music, and all the beautiful women dancing and laughing, her friends must have had a blast. She went home with Bette on their last day to say goodbye to Rose, Hector, Trish and Adam as well as all the school children who taught her how to salsa. She smiles, hoping she can see them all again soon.

“It’s been two years and every time I see this sight it takes my breath away.” Phyllis whispers, as they get closer to uninhabited side of the island.

Tina nods in agreement. The monumental and noble mountains, the plush green foliage and the sparkling white beaches, is just as spectacular and grand as she remembers. She laughs at the memory of first seeing the island from a low flying, fast falling plane.

“Okay. We can’t land completely since we have no crew, so when we get close enough just jump. I’ll toss you your bag.”

“Wait, What?” Tina looks at her with worry.

“Just jump. You might get your toes wet but that’s all.”

“Shit.” Tina pulls off her expensive sandals and prepares herself more mentally than physically.

    “Ready? One! Two! Three! JUMP!”

Tina jumps as far as she can, landing safely on the edge of the dry sand. She turns quickly, grinning in victory but is thrown back onto her bottom as she catches her heavy bag. She looks up to see Phyllis smiling proudly and the boat captain laughing.

“See you both in two weeks! That is, if you don’t kill each other first!” Phyllis yells chuckling as the party boat glides away and disappears into the afternoon sun.
