I Will Not Let You Fall

Watching him, Bette found it interesting how what had started as a typical recital of instructions now ended with insistent threatening.

The officer seemed proud of himself. ”Oh, don’t think you’re the only one subjected to such conditions. This is a standard parole program and I’m only the person who will contribute to your social improvement.”

    ”Right,” Bette mumbled.

    ”Any questions for me?”

    Bette shook her head.

”August 13th will be your next check in date. Come between 9:30-10:30am or 2:30-3:30pm. I hope next time you will be more talkative and open with me,” he said, giving her a pointed look before sliding the piece of paper with Ayola’s address over to her again. ”Write your phone number below.”

    ”I don’t have a phone.”

Snatching the piece of paper back, the officer tilted his head. ”Then you need to get one.”

”I don’t have money for a phone, sir.”

Phillips gave an overly exasperated sigh and then began speaking in a slow, measured voice, ”You need. To get a phone. Until our next meeting. You have one week, enough time to earn money to buy a phone. Phones are affordable for pretty much everybody these days. Besides, as far as I know you were released with a 120$ discharge grant, so don’t lie to me saying you don’t have money.”

    Bette nodded. ”Okay.”

The officer stood up, prompting Bette to do the same. They shook hands.

”I wish you good luck, Bette,” Phillips smiled a tense, phony smile at the brunette.

Bette stared down at him, wondering when he was going to let her hand go. When he finally did, Bette thought she saw him swallow. ”Thank you, sir.”

    ”Call me Franklin.”

When Bette stepped out of the office, other parolees that were waiting in the waiting room turned their head toward her, having the same dull look in their eyes. Walking away, Bette shook her head at the whole event. Even though she was used to an attitude similar to what her parole officer had just displayed, the meeting still had left a depressing aftertaste. As she made her way out of the building, she tried to convince herself that everything would get better with time.

A wave of hot humid air hit her in the face when she finally came outside. She closed her eyes and took a breath. The air smelled like ocean and the mere reminder of the ocean immediately softened her resentment towards staying in Los Angeles. She made herself a promise to get to the beach sometime later today.

    1. Thank you for the another chapter!

Ok, we still don’t know anything about how Tina lives with her life, does she she even remember Bette?
And maybe, just maybe she even helped with Bette’s parole? Well, or maybe i just want to think that she did.
And i like Bette and Ayola friendship but i hope it will not create sexual or romantic feelings between them ( i still like only B&T relationship)

    2. Hi Valerie:

Wonderful chapter; a little sad Ms. Caroll passed, she was like a mother for Bette.

Who has Bette’s apartment now? It looks like someone who wants to keep it as Bette left it; maybe, maybe not.

I would like to know about Tina’s life, but perhaps you will fill us on it when she reappears in Bette’s life.

Very nice Bette’s new friend, Ayola, very compassionate; I hope they remain to be friends,

Thank you very much for this chapter, this story is excellent, I’ll be waiting eagerly for your update (and for the other story too).

    3. Great chapter! Sad that Mrs. Caroll has passed away. Ayola is very nice and what Bette needs to get reacquainted with the outside world. Hopefully, they will remain friends. However, I want Tina to resurface and she and Bette get reintroduced and get to know each other again. Great update!

    4. Hi Valerie,
Can only say ‘Ditto’ to my fellow reader’s Comments.
      Great Update.
Look forward to another as soon as possible please.
Need Tina back in the Story and in a positive ‘Tibbette’ way please!
      Thanks again

    5. Hi Valerie,

      Great chapter as always!

I love that Bette found a great friend in Ayola, that is so important when you are all alone and trying to build a new life. Like i already thought Mrs. Caroll passed away, that is so sad. I hope Ayola will stay a wonderfull friend for Bette and i think she is the link to Tina.

I had to laugh that you named the parole officer Franklin Philips ????

Just like proteonomics, i am wondering about Bette’s old apartment,

I hope you can update soon and that your computer saves your chapter the next time.

    6. Geez.. it’s just all so sad…i had a feeling her friend and mother had past but the rest is sad as well. She needs love and a since of belonging, fitting in to her own life. Her new friend is helping with that but like others have said friend is were it needs to stay…and I do hope Tina has kept an eye on her all along from afar.fingers crossed thank you.
