If I Fall: Chapter 6
‘This is a bad idea,’ Alice mused as she parked the Mini in The Planet’s parking lot. She took a deep breath and reached for the rear view mirror to check her complexion. Despite the reality of her morning she didn’t appear to look as if she’d slept a total of three hours throughout the night and woken up in a cold sweat from what had now become a recurring nightmare. She wasn’t always able to piece it together exactly, but she knew it typically involved the common elements of a tidal wave destroying everything around her while pulling her under its current in the process, as Dana looked on unable to save her. She knew it probably had some subconscious meaning, but regardless, Alice was sure it was just another sign that she needed to move on.
As soon as she stepped out the door this morning, she couldn’t fight the nagging feeling that there’d be another trying encounter with Dana today. And after yesterday’s debacle, she was unsure if she’d even be able to handle it. As she stared at herself in the mirror, running a hand through her disheveled hair in the hopes of seeming semi-presentable, she resolved to not make their second encounter in the same amount of days an equivocal disaster. It was up to her to set the tone between the two, seeing as Dana would likely just follow her lead. And she did want nothing more than to make this as easy as possible on the both of them, seeing as she did miss her best friend almost as much as she missed her girlfriend.
So she resolved to not let her anger and pain get the best of her as she tamed her unruly locks and quickly moistened her lips with some gloss. ‘Okay, Pieszecki, pull yourself together. You’re here to have a cup of coffee and catch up with your friends. If Dana happens to be there, you smile politely and focus on anything else but her.’
Although six whole months had gone by since Dana left, Alice had still not gotten used to life without her. That was partly because for most of that time she avoided, like the plague, any place the tennis player would be. Unfortunately, that included The Planet…as well as most of the other places her friends tended to congregate at. And this reason alone was initially why it was such an effortless task becoming close with Helena Peabody.

Cute danish comments at the beginning of the story. The “peeper” scene was one of the few times that I felt bad for Dana. It made me cringe when I saw it, and when I read it. Man, Alice was in bad shape, and she couldn’t stop herself. I love that they are finally on the road to friendship, though I expect it to be rocky. Thanks so much for the update!I have no willpower when it comes to fanfic. I either find myself running late for work in the morning because of an update, or in this case, late for a Christmas party. I think I have 9 minutes to get ready, but it was soooooooooo worth it! Happy Holidays.
I don’t know why you’re not entirely happy with this, I think it’s fabulous. I love the explanation as to how Helena and Alice became friends, and of course the danish comments…I did that too, a few chapters back in my story, and laughed the whole time I was typing it out. Anyway, I’m rambling but I love the direction you’re taking this, and it’s making more and more sense as it goes on. You make it realistic and true tothe characters, which is a hell of a lot more than I can say for the original version. Thanks for posting this, have a good holiday and congrats on getting through your finals!
I don’t see anything to dislike in this chapter. I enjoyed it; I thought it was realistic and the pace is right. Small moves, for the both of them, but actually a giant leap from where Al and Dana had been. We’ll have to see how they get on next time at the Planet. Good on you for getting through your finals, post soon, and have a Happy Christmas. Cheers!
If only something like this had happened in the show :( you have no reason not to be 100% happy with this because it’s amazing. You have me laughing one minute, pausing for deep thought, almost in tears the next it’s just brilliant and it seems to explain a lot of things that we didnt see in the show. I too love how Helena and Alice became friend, I can so picture that happening, however don’t slate starbucks coffee, I use it every day at work :P xx
