    “That would be by the critic who wants to sleep with her “Melvin said dryly
    “Are you saying that someone would only describe her as beautiful if they wanted to sleep with her?”
    “No but they might think it would help – which incidentally it doesn’t “
    “The reviews were excellent – Bette is not so secretly thrilled about the thrills because it vindicates everything that she is doing and of course it adds dollar signs to her commission. Every artist worth their salt wants to be exhibited by Bette “
    They both smiled – as proud as parents always are with the triumphs of their children.
    “She’s one hell of a woman “Melvin said “It takes my breath away that she is as accomplished as she is “
    “I know its quibbling and I know that her career means so much to her “Rosemary sighed
    “I just wish she would meet someone. It would make me so happy if she settled down and maybe one day, we could dream of her having a family. Wouldn’t you love to see her in a long-term relationship “?
    “Of course, I would – but I know her as well as you – she does things her way – at her speed and if she is happy with all these trophy girlfriends you and I cannot interfere “
    Rosemary sighed and nodded in agreement. The rightness of his argument did not take away from the fact that she knew that Melvin wanted to see Bette settled as much as she did.
    The waiter came across and they took a few minutes to place their food order. That done Melvin lent back and smiled
    “I did need a Martini because of the day that I had endured. But I might have settled for just going for a coffee and a pretzel on the way back to the office had I not bumped into an old friend at the courthouse “
    “Really?”
    “A friend of ours “
    Rosemary looked interested
    “This sounds good “
    “It is – do you remember Emma Kennard?”
    Rosemary thought for the briefest of seconds before she laughed
    “Emma Kennard – of course I do. She was stunning “
    “And she had a crush on you” he reminded her

    “She did and she admitted that she did when we were chatting – she called you hot “
    Rosemary laughed “Oh boy – Emma Kennard. Please tell me that you swapped numbers – I would love to see her again “
    “Dinner on Friday – I have her phone number in my notebook and I said that you would call her “
    “Of course – oh that is just wonderful – tell me all – tell me, how is she?”
    “She is a partner in Kennard Truman and Black – I have had dealings with Kate Truman but the Kennard part never clicked with me. She is the senior partner so she’s got the running of the business to do – she doesn’t handle many cases. It was wonderful to see her – she looks fantastic “
    “She always did – is she married?”
    “Her partner died 3 years ago and she was bemoaning the lack of opportunities for a lesbian of her age “
    “I imagine she is fighting them off with a stick “
    Melvin smiled
    “She did tell me about her daughter “

    Melvin wondered how long it would take Rosemary to make the connection. It took her about five seconds
    “Single?” she said raising one eyebrow.
    “In a very unhappy relationship that Emma doesn’t think have much longer to last. I told Emma that our daughter is beautiful, intelligent and would be a fantastic girlfriend for any woman “
    Rosemary nodded “That’s the truth “
    “Emma is thinking what you are thinking – that our daughters should be brought together “
    “Well she has to be more suitable that the conveyor belt of airheads that Bette currently seems content with “
    Melvin sipped his wine
    “You really think that Bette is happy in her personal life? For me last night brought it home to me how sad she looks. I love my daughter as much as you do Ro and I hate to see how false her smile is. “
    Rosemary was slightly taken aback by how sharp Melvin could be about Bette. But it was his job to read people – both in and out of court.
    “Last night was odd – on the one hand it was her night of triumph. It was an expression of her genius – her skills and eye for art and how intelligent she is. But it was also a display of how lonely she must be. I know she has friends who love her dearly and she adores Alice and Helena but she should have been sharing her success with someone who she really was committed to “
    “You and I are old fashioned Rosemary – we ideally want her to be married and planning for grandchildren but she is who she is. I do wonder how she would react if she met someone who was not like all the others. Not as empty or as easy to dismiss “
    “I would dearly love to see someone break through Bette’s formidable defences “
    “What is Emma’s daughter called?”
    “Tina “
    Emma sipped her wine again and thought for a few minutes
    “Bette and Tina sound a good combination “
    “All we can do is push them in the right direction “
    “If I remember anything at all about Emma Kennard it was that she usually got what she wanted. I would be delighted if she wanted our daughters to get together “

    1. this read is very familiar, Tina in bad relationships like bette’s fleeting trophy arm candy women. beg me t ask, is this the story where tine decides to join Emma’s firm and become part of the legal profession? and bette and Tina do meet and begin a relationship with the blessings of everyone.

      *****( ahh but I digress. the story I recall is when Emma does have a wife Kate whom Tina adores until Emma and Kate’s relationship ends due to infidelity on the part of one partner,, emma’s relationship with Tina was volatile at best on the better days, Tina ends up joining Emma’s firm, starts a relationship with bette and Emma begins to resent bette and Tina’s relationship due to…hw can it be said, “jealousy” of bette being with Tina? )******

      this story seems to be a combination of two stories combined with one. thank you for sharing.

    2. Nice one, Ally. Did you write it before “One and only”? I like the re-use of the parents’ characters.

      I’d love to read more of it. Wonder what you have in mind for Bette and Tina. Feels like Helena might bump into T first and set her eyes on her. The parents’ matchmaking could go wrong. Or even funnier if Tina meets Bette while running in Central Park and they start dating without their parents knowing.

      Your first chapters were enough for me to be very curious of where you might take this story, so please continue.

      Happy New Year ????

      This story sounds familiar and mm mentioned about it. Emma’s wife Kate was still alive and it ended because Emma cheated. I think that Tina went to work with Rosemary and not with her mother in the firm. And if my memory is correct, Rosemary and Emma or Kate were involved in a romance in the very past, college or present.

      Any way, i am very happy to see you back with a Tibette story. You are a fantastic writer and i am currently rereading The L Wing. Any chance you are going to finish that one like you did with New York Minute a few years ago?

    4. Yes I remember that story but if my memory serves me right, Bette and Tina met when they were way younger, The background was more or less the same….
      But I love this new version, it’s really great and well written as usaul with you Ally !

      Interesting story and I know I have read these characters before but I loved them and even more now because they are in a new story. A BnT story I feel a slow burn coming on.. lol especially if it’s taking this long for them to meet and now Bette’s suspicious of her mom setting her up but the only good thing is we know she will be surprised that there is a younger version she can make a real life with .. both their futures are about to collide they just dont know it yet.. why can’t very parent be like these..lol thank you and welcome back.
