    “So how was the theatre on Thursday darling?”
    “It was really nice – I had a good time “
    Bette was out shopping on Saturday morning with her mother. They liked to stroll around the stores and today Rosemary wanted to look at suits for Melvin. Bette often bought men’s shirts and had them tailored a little to her fit – they just felt supremely comfortable for her and she was prepared to pay for what she knew was a quirk.
    “Was the show good?”
    “The show was excellent – I think you and dad would enjoy it “
    “If it’s not Ella Fitzgerald I don’t see your father enjoying a musical “
    “Well Pam Grier has a superb voice and he would enjoy seeing it “
    “I will try and get tickets for tonight “
    “No point – I rang up the box office on Friday – hoping to get you tickets – it sold out for the next three weeks “

    “Really wow – that’s impressive – I thought Broadway was in the middle of the same recession that everyone else is “
    “Well it’s not often you get Pam Grier and Cybil Shepherd on the same bill and they were both fantastic — so confident and a great advert for the slightly mature woman”
    “I believe Cybil Shepherd’s daughter is a lesbian “
    “I gathered that from listening to a couple behind me “Bette said dryly
    Rosemary picked up a sweater and regarded it thoughtfully
    “Did you meet anyone nice?”
    Bette looked at her mother with suspicion. She had been doing a lot of thinking and it was beginning to look more and more likely that her mother was trying to set her up and the prime candidate seemed to be Emma Kennard. Bette eyed her mother
    “It was very odd “she said picking her words with great care
    “What was?”
    “Well the house full signs were up and it had been sold out for weeks. “
    Bette looked at her mother who glanced at her
    “Yes darling “
    “What was odd was that I had two seats to myself – just me and a place for my coat, program and some candy “
    Bette could tell by the way her mom’s face fell that there was something going on. She looked disappointed and it showed so clearly on her face. Bette wasn’t sure whether to be glad that her suspicions had been vindicated or guilty that somehow or other she had let her mother down
    “Really – that is odd “Rosemary agreed
    “I wonder who would not take the chance to see such a fantastic show “Bette said adding to her mother’s disappointment
    Rosemary turned away with the sweater in her hand and walked a few steps to put the sweater back. Bette looked at her mother for a few minutes – this was just getting stranger. Why would her mother try and set her up with a woman old enough to be her mother? Why was her father on the one hand warning her against Emma Kennard while at the same time colluding by passing over the ticket to the show? Bette had no doubts that if she did some digging, she would find that the ticket she had used had been funded via Emma Kennard.
    “Would you like a coffee mom?” Bette asked
    Rosemary looked at her watch “Yes – that would be really nice “
    Bette picked up a couple of white shirts she had been eyeing for five minutes
    “Well the café is on the third floor in here – are you buying anything for dad?”
    “I am not sure – I did like the sweaters in the last shop we went to “
    “Which I wanted you to buy him but you pulled a face at the price “Bette reminded
    “Well yes “Rosemary said smiling “Are you buying those shirts ?”

    3. Thanks for posting! So glad you’re continuing with this story.
      Emma really is one demanding mother. I was waiting for Tina’s patience to snap with every sentence coming out of Emma’s mouth. I wished Emma would stop trying to manipulate Tina’s life. Why did she ask for the funding of the center? I hope she doesn’t try anything that willl cause Tina to loose her job.

      Can’t wait to read more!

    5. Ahhh, yes, the queen of drama is back. Glad Bette worked out the setup. Did she see Tina on the firm’s website? Poor Tina just needs some focus and someone to help her self esteem. I think the fine Bette Porter is what the doctor ordered. PPS

    7. Interesting. First – we still don’t know if it’s Tina or just another blond.
      And second – both Bette and Tina seems not very mature despite their age. When you in 30 years and you still allow your parents dictate how to spend your time, where do you need to work or how to spend the weekend – are you sure you’re mature enough for the relationship?

I do like this story….I know many parents of heterosexual parents who would respond just like the Porters and Emma Kennard especially if their child had reach age 30 and had no long term prospects for a mate and a marriage. Their true desire is grandchildren and they view the eligibility window to be closing.

      I love this Bette. She really is thoughtful and close to her parents. I just wish she could just sit them down and have a direct conversation about what they are doing instead of trying to guess.

      Tina seems a little slower on seeing what is going on however the real story is beginning to take shape. I wonder how Tina is enticed to go to the restaurant. The next chapter should be a really interesting one.

    12. So she did do some real research. And what made her think that Tina didnt know either.. lol luck guess I’m sure. But Tina could have easily know and was dodging her all along.. unlikely know.. lol great chapter and glad to see Bette wants more for herself.. thank you.
