Bette stirred in bed and opened her eyes – Tina was missing which always meant that the day didn’t get off to the best possible start. Bette looked at the bedside alarm clock – 8:42 . So it was quarter to nine on a Saturday morning -so normally Bette would not be worrying about Tina’s non presence in bed. But this was not a normal Saturday – this was the anniversary of Tina’s mom’s death and it wasn’t a day that Tina was looking forward to. Tuesday had been a high – the job offer was massive and Bette had hoped that the buzz from that piece of great news would help her over something that was going to be tougher for her. But Friday night they had gone to a movie and dinner together and Tina had been quiet – Bette hadn’t mentioned what she knew the problem was – this was not the time to push Tina. So Bette was taking the laid back approach and had decided to not have any preconceptions about how Tina was going to be today. Bette lay in bed for five minutes but in the end knew that something was up so she got up – put her robe on and went to the bedroom door.
Tina was sitting on the sofa, dressed in pyjama bottoms and a huge sweater. She was sitting clutching her knees and she was listening to something with headphones on. Tears were falling down her face as she sat. Bette’s heart went out to the blonde – this was going to be a tough day but Bette was determined to be whatever her lover needed her to be. Bette walked into the room and crossed to the sofa and sat down. Tina looked at her and managed a tiny smile.
“What are you listening to ?”
“One of the songs she wanted at her funeral “
“Care to share ?” Bette asked.
Tina nodded and got up and removed the headphone cable from the hi-fi socket. She got back onto the sofa and allowed Bette to pull her into her arms. She picked up the remote control for the hi-fi and pressed play.
May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
May you stay forever young.
