They arrived at Peggy’s office just before 6:45pm – as Bette had predicted there were lots of people milling around. A pretty waitress appeared in front of them as they walked into Peggy’s office carrying a tray of champagne. Tina took two glasses of champagne and handed one to Tina
“Peggy doesn’t do understated “ Bette commented looking around the room.
“I had figured that out – come over here – I want you to met a couple of people”
Tina and Bette had been chatting to a couple of people that Tina worked with when Melvin and Rosemary walked in. Bette gestured to her parents who collected their drinks and joined them
    “Hello girls “
“Hey mom, dad “ Bette kissed her father and hugged her mother
    “Hello Tina darling “
“Hello Rosemary, Melvin “ Tina kissed both of her “in laws “
“What is all this about Bette ?” Melvin asked “Is it going to go on long ? I have been in dreary meetings all day and I just want to unwind in front of some sport with a large scotch in my hand and pizza on a plate “
“Peggy wants everyone to see a painting that I have acquired for her” Bette said
    “A yacht ?” Rosemary asked
    “Well yes “ Bette said
“Peggy told me all about it last week – she was not happy and I was not very happy when I heard the story “
“Well I think she has forgotten about the disappointment of that – I don’t imagine this will go on very long dad “
    “Good “
“Melvin is really not as grumpy as he is pretending to be “ Rosemary said to Tina
“Melvin is lovely and its perfectly reasonable to wind down from a hellish day with sport, scotch and pizza “ Tina beamed at him
“Thank you Tina “ Melvin winked at her
“Look “ Rosemary said gesturing towards the door
“Shit “ Tina said as she saw Helena and Emma coming into the room
“She hasn’t invited both of them has she ?” Bette said – her guts told her that this was not going to be as straight-forward as it had first seemed.
“Have they seen us ?” Melvin asked
“Sadly yes “ Tina said dryly “We should have come in disguise “
Helena and Emma came towards where they could see their friends standing
“Helena “ Bette greeted her best friend “Hello Emma “
“What the hell is going on ?” Helena demanded
    “You don’t know ?”
“We were just heading out to the theatre and Jack Arnley asked if I was heading upstairs to mother’s office – what’s happening – why are the four of you and everyone else here ? “
“You are about to find out “ Rosemary said “Here is Peggy “
Peggy came in and stood in front of the painting which was hidden behind a screen. She stepped onto a box holding a glass of champagne and she cleared her throat
Tina looked at Bette – she took hold of her hand – they could both sense that this wasn’t going to be the joyous moment that they had envisaged when Peggy had invited them to the unveiling of the painting.
“I want to thank all of you for coming her at such short notice – I will not detain you all from your planned evenings but I want to share my happiness with all of you.”
Bette looked at her father who shrugged
“I have collected many beautiful and valuable pieces of art in my life. I have some exquisite sculptures and paintings. But I have just obtained a piece that while it is not vastly expensive has already given me more pleasure than any other piece that makes it without a price for me. I have to thank Bette Porter – my brilliant, talented and kind art dealer and friend for going to such lengths to obtain this for me – thank you Bette. Your friendship means more to me than I know how to tell you”
Bette blushed as Tina grinned with pride. Helena raised an eyebrow at her friend.
“This is without price to me because it is a memory of my late husband who tragically died almost 20 years ago. I miss him in ways that I didn’t realise until this painting came into my life . He was my best friend and my strength and not a day passes when I do not think about him. Now I will be able to share my business with him with this watching down on me “
She nodded to the two men standing beside the screen and they lifted it to one side.
“The Peggy Helena and its skipper John Peabody “
There was a polite round of applause and several comments
“Its just like him “ a tall grey haired man commented
    “Lovely painting”
Bette and Tina looked to Helena and Emma
“Wow “ Helena said walking over to the painting “Dad “
“She’s really moved by it “ Rosemary remarked
“It might thaw the ice between them “ Melvin said
Bette smiled – maybe it was going to be a good thing. That thought lasted a few seconds until Emma turned and looked daggers at Bette
“Shit “ Tina said obviously recognising the signs
Emma moved a couple of paces towards Bette
    “You bitch “

    1. The dragon has been awakened! Time to leave town Bette and Tina. Actually, I think this is perfect way to get revenge on Emma. Emma got what she wanted and Bette made her client happy. Helena is now in love with the painting owned by her mother and the one without dear ole Dad just will not be the same. How will Emma respond? How will Tina respond? This is now personal with Emma. It just business for Bette and Tina. And the war between Peggy and Emma has just drawn blood.

What a story….. Can’t wait to see how Bette responds with Rosemary and Melvin watching and with Tina by her side. And Helen and Peggy in the audience, its not going to be pretty. The drama abounds.

Keep it coming. I am sitting on the edge of my seat. It not like we couldn’t see this coming. But how its gets resolved? I haven’t a clue.

Thank you for this drama….. love it.

      • Couldn’t have said it better Martha!

This story is fantastic! I hope you will give us a update asap! I want to know so much how Emma is going to respond and it is clearly Bette she sees as the enemy now.

        • Completely agree with these two!

Please Ally don’t leave us too long! I know you have your Drama Queen Title to promote but have pity on us poor isolating fans!

    2. Wow, I have been busy all week and caught up this morning with coffee and binge reading! What a twist! Martha is on target….please post soon. The suspense of how Bette and Tina will respond to Emma’s outburst towards Bette. And, Rosemary and Melvin will certainly have some special words for Emma. Oh, this is going to not end well for Emma. More of this story soon….please!

    3. This cannot end well under any possible scenario. Emma calling Bette a bitch???? How will that remark alone play out with Tina, Rosemary, and Melvin? Not well!!!!! This showdown was not calculated by Peggy and the painting clearly is such a personal and sentimental reminder of her beloved husband and Helena’s father. Emma is so blinded by her selfishness and greed she could not keep her mouth shut. Bette had to protect both her professional and personal relationship with Peggy. The original painting is still Helena’s but that is not good enough for Emma. If this is not handled properly it will destroy Bette and Helena’s friendship which is beyond tragic. Emma has made a spectacle of herself in public and potentially embarrassed Bette at what was to be such a happy moment. Emma was not an invited guest. I love this story and I am enjoying playing out the possibilities of what happens next. How can Helena possibly condone Emma’s behavior? Sadly she might. She will lose Bette. Perhaps Emma underestimated Helena’s understanding of Peggy’s devotion to her father. I really hope Helena gets her mind right. Bette is her best friend. She did nothing wrong in any way. She did everything right. Peggy did nothing wrong. Tina, get your mother under control! Again, Emma calling Bette a bitch – a bitch – in public? Yikes!!!!!!

    4. Emma has jumped the shark! Away goes Tina, away goes Melvin and Rosemary, away goes Helena if she has not totally screwed her brains away. Emma vs Peggy! Lets get ready to rumble!

    5. What a mature thing to say, Emma. Grow up! That woman annoys me. She might be wealthy enough to play in Peggy’s league but she is missing every bit of the class and style that Peggy has. Nouveau riche comes to my mind. Arrrggh!!!
She’s not only acting like a teenager in love but like a spoiled teenager who always get her way and is pissed when she doesn’t get what she wants. She doesn’t have the least inkling what the painting symbolizes and what it means to both Peggy and Helena. Just a guess but judging by H’s reaction I’d say Helena might even have given the painting to her mother – birthday present or not.

As for her affair with Helena….sigh… it was funny for a week or two.
Let me go off on a tangent for a moment. I’m wondering whether she’s staying with H because she’s jealous of Tina and her beautiful, successful girlfriend. And of the fact that her daughter overcame her grief and gets on with her own life just fine. Without Emma, without her watching and nagging constantly.
Maybe that’s why she is trying to outdo her daughter with a fling with a woman who could be Bette’s sister.

Emma reminds me of Tom Cruise when he started seeing Katie Holmes. The age difference was only about ten years but I remember some interviews where he was trying to talk like a twenty-something and to appear much younger. Unbearable.

That said, I hope there are enough adults around to put Emma on the naughty step until she is able to apologize to Bette, Tina, Peggy, Helena, well to everybody. ;-)

I hope that Tina and Bette will get out of this unscathed, still very much in love and able to enjoy their weekend.

Thank you for sharing, Ally! Always a pleasure to read.
