Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

The captain wishes me to inform you that we will be landing in twenty minutes.” The flight attendant informed, her tone so gentle and warm it was like listening to the soft, velvety voice of those women who did voiceovers for 1-800 phone-sex commercials on TV.

Oh? Okay, thank you..” Tina replied, consciously moving a hand to block what she had written on her notebook, wary of those blue eyes invading her private thoughts.

Can I get you anything before then? A glass of water? Some more coffee? Or perhaps a hot towel?”

No thanks, I’m good.” Tina smiled and shook her head, politely rejecting the lady’s gracious offers. The hot towel sounded enticing.. but nah, it brought back a lot of memories. Memories that involved a sick and bedridden Bette. So, maybe next time.

Very well then. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to call.” The beautiful attendant smiled, turning on her heels and angling her body back to her place by the jet’s mini-bar and kitchen.

Wait..!” A voice beckoned, stopping the older woman in her tracks.

    Yes?”

Tina hesitated. But her hesitation only lasted for a fraction of a second. Ah hell, one more won’t hurt. “Can I have another one please?” She lifted the nearly empty box in her hand.

Yes, of course. Right away ma’am.” The flight attendant smiled at the young woman with all the politeness that her time at the stewardess school had taught her, keeping her eyes glued to Tina’s face instead of the eight empty triangular containers of Toblerone scattered beside her. Instead of pity, she gave the obviously sullen blonde every ounce of understanding that she had in her body. After all, if she didn’t have to wear these tight pencil skirts and bosom-squeezing blouses to make a living, she was sure she’d be binging on chocolate and sweets whenever she was in the same somber mood as Tina was right now.

Thank you.” Tina managed a grateful smile before sinking her teeth into the last remaining piece of chocolate in her right hand. Someone told her once, an old junior high classmate back at North Carolina, that the best cure for a broken heart is not a new lover.. or extracting revenge.. or working out and literally exercising your demons.. or watching sappy movies.. or getting a new pet to invest all emotions in. It was not those things, or any other foolish coping mechanisms for that matter. According to Cindy Healy’s youthfully naive wisdom, the best cure for a broken heart is none other than.. chocolate. The almighty food for the gods. Lots and lots of that deep brown chocolatey goodness can heal even the deepest of hurts. It was effective, said Cindy, it’s curative effects were legendary. And right now, as Tina chewed happily and licked her fingers clean of that gooey sweetness, she would have to admit that her former classmate made sense. Nevermind that when she last saw Cindy, through the woman’s profile in Facebook, she was sixty pounds overweight and was still obviously nursing an eight-year old broken heart. To Tina, what mattered now was that she was happy.. well, as happy as a broken-hearted woman who missed her Bette could be.

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    4. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    5. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
