Laid Up: Another Season 3– Chapter 21C

Carmen looked down at the Mapquest directions she had printed out before leaving West Hollywood. According to the detailed directions, once she made the next left, she would be four houses away from Gabe McCutcheon’s home. She turned and slowed. Shane looked up expectantly. Carmen reached over and grasped Shane’s hand, holding on in spite of its dampness. “Here we are, babe.”

“Yeah.” Shane slid her hand out of Carmen’s and wiped them on her jeans. “Okay,” she exhaled loudly. “Okay, okay.”

There were plenty of spaces on the block. It was the late morning and most people she guessed were at work. Two spots were open directly in front of the house, but she parked three houses past it. She wanted to give Shane a few extra minutes to collect herself, relax into what she was going to do. She turned the car off and got out. Shane was already on the sidewalk when Carmen came around. She wanted to take Shane’s hand, but didn’t. Instead, she tilted head and said, “You’re really brave. You know that?”

Shane didn’t answer. Her big brown eyes were more doe-like than usual and her heart pounded as they made their way to her father’s house.

At the door, Carmen slid back, moved to the side, and allowed Shane to have her first moments with her father privately. Shane rang the bell and waited. She heard a woman shouting something, the sound of heavy footsteps heading toward the door. The door swung open and a man who looked so much like Shane’s father stood tall and smiling, looking down at her. His hair had gone more salt than pepper, but he still had the same expression—mischievous and handsome, now with a ruggedness to his face that didn’t exist in his twenties. The creases and lines made him more good looking and Shane guessed he still attracted women.

“Shane!” His grin was infectious and Shane smiled back at him.

“Hey, Dad.” Shane was shy and it came out in her voice

    1. Wow, really, just, well wow. I was enthralled, nervous, excited, riveted, the adjectives could go on forever. I have always loved this story and was aware as to why you had not been posted. I had sent my best wishes when you informed everyone what was happening in your personal life, wishing the best for you. I’m sorry to hear that the outcome was losing your mother, it’s hard. Hopefully time has helped heal that wound and you focus on the positive memories you have of your time together. I can really feel the presense of these experiences in your writing, in the writing of this updat. it was absolutely amazing. i look forward to seeing you back on the boards and know that your fanfic friends have you in their thoughts!

    2. Damn! If there ever was an awared for the longest chapters you would win hands down! This was bloddy fantastic! The shit is really about to hit the fan! My heart goes out to you for your loss.

    3. I hope your grief diminishes and your memories grow. As for your chapter…holey moley! Good for you for writing such thoughtful and substantive piece…and all those pages…holey moley! All the best to you. Cheers.

    4. I lost my mother a year ago, so I can empathize with your loss. I’ve been a huge fan of this story from day one. Its polish, consistently high quality, and yes, length, is clearly the result of prodigious effort, and I thank you for sharing it with us. Like earlier installments, this chapter ran an emotional gamut: lines like “Bette would have had a conniption if she had heard herself described as a bull dyke” made me laugh out loud; the wrenching account of Bette’s childhood abandonment did the opposite. Take care, and post whenever you’re so inclined.

    5. Portia, I’ve missed you and this story–what a treat to log on and find you’d left a 49 page chapter! On a more somber note, I’m sorry to hear about your mother’s passing. I can’t imagine how difficult that must have been. Take care of yourself, and keep writing–it can be good therapy.

    6. Dear Portia, Its taken me three days to find the time to read this big chapter – and it was worth every moment. I was very sad when I got to the last page and read that you’d just lost your mother. You’ve given so much to us in your time of grief – thank you for sharing your time and talent.

    7. i am not a big commentor, i always feel someone has already said what i want to say, but i felt the need to comment on this chapter. i too lost my mother recently in nov. and there is not a day that goes by that i don’t think about her, and i too feel the void, like a part of you is missing, and i just wanted to say i understand what you are going through, and my thoughts and prayers are with you now. great writing!!!!!!
