LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-14
”yes it is. Maybe you’re right.” Tina said almost convinced ”let’s go, we’re waiting in pediatrics for Timothy Walter.”
Amelia hugged Tina and they took the elevator that would take them to the fourth floor to the pediatrics department. Here it was anything but blue and white sheets, the beds had colored blankets of all kinds, with stars, with geometric shapes, with cartoon heroes. Here everything was colorful.
Tina smiled instinctively without realizing it as she walked through those corridors that were strangely full of joy.
In those rooms there were children even younger than Angelica, yet they were smiling, the air that circulated was cheerful, full of desire to live, this amazed Tina.
”Timothy is an extremely sweet child, Skinner and I had an operation three months ago, before that we operated on Bette twice more, he had a facial malformation that pressed on the front part of the brain… it’s a delicate situation. But Tim, God… everyone adores him.”
So he was Bette’s patient.
Tina was happy to get away from her neuro department, sometimes it was all too much. And then Amelia had convinced her to follow this post-op case with her because Timothy would definitely have to have another surgery in the spring and Amelia would be in Minnesota at the time, so she would divert the case to Tina.
For Tina it was all a new experience.
As they entered the room Tina couldn’t help but notice the head full of curls that turned away from her, she recognized those shoulders well and also that black and cream striped chameleon sweater. Her body stiffened and she immediately stopped in her tracks while Amelia’s went quickly shouting a collective ”good morning”.
The curly head turned smiling, eyes half closed as always when she smiled.
”Amy…” her sweet voice said
”Dr. Porter, aren’t you a patient today?” Amelia joked until Bette turned around meeting the blonde after days of absence.
There was an awkward silence until Bette gave Tina a friendly smile and then turned to the one who was Tim’s mother ”this is Dr. Kennard, a new god of neurosurgery.” Bette said with emphasis and Tina’s back shivered at those words, giving her the push to go in and introduce herself to little Tim.
