Let It Happen – Chapter III

Before he could continue, Bette said quickly, “That’s great James. Would you please ask the caterers to continue the clean-up tomorrow?  You can also go home now. You’ve done a lot tonight and must be tired.  Don’t worry, I’ll do the final checks, and set the alarm when we leave.”  She smiled her thanks to him and sat on the chair James had pulled up next to Tina.

He mouthed a question to Bette, ”Is she alright? Should I call a cab or something?”

Bette shook her head quickly, shot him a quick smile, and mouthed an answer, ”Don’t worry. Go on home. Thanks for everything.”

Tina’s head had slumped over on Bette’s shoulder, hair spilling over her face, obscuring it from view. Bette turned to her with a worried look on her face.

James cleared his throat. ”Ok, ok. I’ll go take care of the caterers, and check on things outside.” He motioned to Bette to call him in case she needed anything, and then walked to the side door.  He went to a hidden control panel on the wall, tapped out a code to shut down the lights. He left one light on by the door, and then pulled the door shut behind him.

After a while, Tina lifted her head from Bette’s shoulder, murmured, ”He’s been trying to call me.”

Bette paused stroking her hair. Her arm encircled Tina to gently embrace her.

”My phone’s on vibrate, and it’s been vibrating for the last half hour or so.”

Bette remained silent, and continued to soothe her by gently rubbing her side. She let Tina talk.  Tina had been holding on to her other hand the whole time, and Bette would gently squeeze her hand from time to time to assure her.

They sat in the semi-darkness in companionable silence. Tina dropped her head on Bette’s shoulder again.  Bette resumed stroking her hair, kissing her chastely.

Finally Bette asked softly, ”Tell me what you want to do, where you want me to take you. Do you want to go to your place, or do you want me to take you to a friend’s place?”

Tina murmured into Bette’s shoulder, ”I don’t want to go back to my place tonight. He might be waiting over there, and I really don’t want to see him tonight. Or ever.”

    1. Dear author, discovering this story of yours last night was truly a gift,
Savouring everything, from the remembering of this magical city of Paris – that is so deeply a part of my soul and heart since always – to this so tender, delicate depiction of our dearest two’s growing attraction I truly love in this story, gives such a comfort to me at a very right moment…
And, finally, these two quotes, in this chapter, brang at the same time smile on my face and tears in my eyes, because something deeply personal resounds in me – bitter sweet memories always present :

“there was something much more intimate and magical in their relationship than undeniable physical attraction (…) She later understood that no matter what would happen later in life between the two of them, Bette would never be able to forget her. This was going to be a relationship that she would not be able to walk away from without being shattered.”

Thank you so much for sharing this true endearing and delicate writing talent with us – I mean it.
      A.

    2. Each, in their own way, will find ways to overlook undesirable things in the other even as they each continue to fall in love with this evolving, changing person they found in “Let It Happen.” Both will continue to change, and will never be the same from book to book in this series.
I hope you’ll get to read the other books — then I hope you let me know what you think.
      Take good care,
      S
