Let It Happen – Chapter III

Bette did a double-take though, when she saw that the girl in Eric’s arms wasn’t blonde, and was certainly not Tina.

Eric, suddenly aware that the gallery owner had been in her office, saw Bette turn determinedly away. Damn! He uttered, sure she had seen them.

Damn! He thought again, pursing his lips, not realizing that another solitary figure, looking on from the walkway atop the main gallery, had also seen them.

Bette paced around her office, trying to decide what to do.  After several minutes, concerned about Tina, she thought she’d decide what to do later, and instead check to see how the blonde was doing first.  Bette walked rapidly out of her office, heading in the direction of the main gallery. As she rounded a corner, she saw Tina slowly descending the winding staircase that led to the walkway atop the main gallery.  Tina had an empty glass in her hand, was swaying slightly, cheeks wet with tears, and red-rimmed eyes were glazed over with sadness.

Bette swiftly walked over, and caught Tina as she staggered down, missing the final step of the stairs.

”Shhhh…. I’ve got you,” Bette said, as she reached out to grab hold of the blonde, intent on keeping her from crashing to the floor.  When she had a secure hold of the blonde’s waist, she gently pulled Tina upright, put away the glass Tina somehow held onto when she slipped, and pulled a handkerchief from her pocket, then gently wiped Tina’s tears. Tenderly brushing hair that fell across Tina’s face, and tucking some behind Tina’s ear, Bette soothe Tina, softly stroking her cheeks.

After a minute Tina looked up to fix a gaze on Bette, saying softly, ”You know,” as Bette slowly released her hold.

”Yes, I do,” Bette responded, with a reassuring small smile.  She eyed Tina’s swaying body, and decided Tina needed to be held.  She opened her arms. Tina fell into them, as if unable to stand.  She leaned on Bette, resting her head on the woman’s shoulder.  This time, she felt their physical closeness soothing, the perfect antidote to the crushing sense of loneliness that enveloped her when she saw Eric kissing someone else.

”I saw them when they walked out into the garden, you know. I saw the whole thing.”

    1. Dear author, discovering this story of yours last night was truly a gift,
Savouring everything, from the remembering of this magical city of Paris – that is so deeply a part of my soul and heart since always – to this so tender, delicate depiction of our dearest two’s growing attraction I truly love in this story, gives such a comfort to me at a very right moment…
And, finally, these two quotes, in this chapter, brang at the same time smile on my face and tears in my eyes, because something deeply personal resounds in me – bitter sweet memories always present :

“there was something much more intimate and magical in their relationship than undeniable physical attraction (…) She later understood that no matter what would happen later in life between the two of them, Bette would never be able to forget her. This was going to be a relationship that she would not be able to walk away from without being shattered.”

Thank you so much for sharing this true endearing and delicate writing talent with us – I mean it.
      A.

    2. Each, in their own way, will find ways to overlook undesirable things in the other even as they each continue to fall in love with this evolving, changing person they found in “Let It Happen.” Both will continue to change, and will never be the same from book to book in this series.
I hope you’ll get to read the other books — then I hope you let me know what you think.
      Take good care,
      S
