Let It Happen – Chapter III

Bette had backed out of the parking lot, and after a few turns, had eased into the flow of highway traffic, which was thankfully light at this hour.  The GPS calculated it would take them about 25 minutes to get to her place, and displayed traffic and route information.  Bette tapped on the screen to shut the display, to keep interior lights at a minimum for Tina. The aria, “The Flower Duet,” played softly in the background as they drove, a slight hum from the outside the only other sound interrupting the cocoon of silence enveloping them in Bette’s comfortable car.

    ”Bette…” Tina began.

    Hmmmm?

”Ummm… about earlier tonight. What happened between us,” Tina stammered, struggling to put her thoughts together.

”Don’t worry about it, Tina,” Bette said, cutting into Tina’s jumbled thoughts.

She glanced over at the blonde who was now looking steadily at her, head still rested against the pillow, hazel eyes communicating something that Bette couldn’t read in the darkness.

”The rest of the night is about you,” Bette said again. ”We can talk about the other stuff some other time.”  She tried to reassure her with a  smile, and then released her hand from the steering wheel, to reach over to Tina’s knee to tap it lightly. She kept her other hand on the wheel, eyes fixed on the road.

Tina reached out for Bette’s hand before the brunette could withdraw it, enjoying, once again, the sweet flow of electricity that had exchanged between them earlier that night. She slowly rubbed her thumb over the soft skin of the back of the Bette’s hand. With her other hand, she began to draw circles over it, using her fingertips, in a gentle caress. Tina slowly sat up, shifted her seat a little, and then rested her head on the seat corner closest to Bette. She brought Bette’s hand to one side of her face, kissing her palm.

Bette drew a shaky breath. She exhaled, and repeated, “Tina, tonight is about you. I promise we’ll talk about what happened, but not right now.”

She didn’t pull her hand from Tina’s face, but managed to get the meaning of her words across.   She caressed the blonde’s face with a thumb, lightly brushing the tip of it across her cheek, to once again try to assure her.

    1. Dear author, discovering this story of yours last night was truly a gift,
Savouring everything, from the remembering of this magical city of Paris – that is so deeply a part of my soul and heart since always – to this so tender, delicate depiction of our dearest two’s growing attraction I truly love in this story, gives such a comfort to me at a very right moment…
And, finally, these two quotes, in this chapter, brang at the same time smile on my face and tears in my eyes, because something deeply personal resounds in me – bitter sweet memories always present :

“there was something much more intimate and magical in their relationship than undeniable physical attraction (…) She later understood that no matter what would happen later in life between the two of them, Bette would never be able to forget her. This was going to be a relationship that she would not be able to walk away from without being shattered.”

Thank you so much for sharing this true endearing and delicate writing talent with us – I mean it.
      A.

    2. Each, in their own way, will find ways to overlook undesirable things in the other even as they each continue to fall in love with this evolving, changing person they found in “Let It Happen.” Both will continue to change, and will never be the same from book to book in this series.
I hope you’ll get to read the other books — then I hope you let me know what you think.
      Take good care,
      S
