Let It Happen – Chapter III
Her mind remained consumed by the encounter with the willowy blonde, her silky tresses, hypnotic hazel eyes, and lust-inducing body. She shook her head, trying to clear it. She was clearly off her game, Bette told herself, unable to understand being vulnerable to this crazy attraction, and inexplicable physical connection to the woman. She also couldn’t shake the feeling of having met her before.
She’s Eric’s girlfriend! She mumbled to herself, a futile reminder, it seemed. A fucking straight girl, Bette! What did you think was going to happen??! What the fuck is happening to you?!
Bette tried to focus on anyone, anything else. She stared at one of her favorite art objects, a Jay DeFeo from the series painted by the artist in California, circa 1987.
Her mind now more accommodating to stillness, she paused at the door of her office, before twisting the knob. Breathe in, breathe out, she told herself. Breathe in, breathe out. She tried to recall the meditative techniques she had learned in a special retreat house outside Paris during her last trip there.
Her mind slowly cleared. After a few more minutes, she had calmed herself down. With a deep breath, she stepped out of her office, reassumed her usual purposeful, graceful stride, and headed out to the main gallery. Ready to share her latest project with the guests assembled outside.

Later that evening, as the applause died down, and excited guests lingered in the special exhibit area, Bette suddenly felt tired. All the preparation leading up to the evening left her feeling mentally and physically tapped out. She thought, ”maybe that’s why remembering the Jodie Lerner piece, and encountering Tina left me vulnerable to all the crazy emotions I felt earlier in the evening.” She looked forward to a relaxing soak in the Jacuzzi once she got home.
She was exchanging pleasantries with guests of the San Francisco socialite. Bette smiled as she listened to them: they turned out to have better taste than the friend who’d brought them, or at least shared some of Bette’s preferences in new trends in art, including the video art installation in the adjacent hall. They were inquiring about possibly joining the inaugural flight to Paris that Bette had announced during her unveiling of an exclusive business jet line service. They were also discreetly inquiring about Bette.

Dear author, discovering this story of yours last night was truly a gift,
Savouring everything, from the remembering of this magical city of Paris – that is so deeply a part of my soul and heart since always – to this so tender, delicate depiction of our dearest two’s growing attraction I truly love in this story, gives such a comfort to me at a very right moment…
And, finally, these two quotes, in this chapter, brang at the same time smile on my face and tears in my eyes, because something deeply personal resounds in me – bitter sweet memories always present :
“there was something much more intimate and magical in their relationship than undeniable physical attraction (…) She later understood that no matter what would happen later in life between the two of them, Bette would never be able to forget her. This was going to be a relationship that she would not be able to walk away from without being shattered.”
Thank you so much for sharing this true endearing and delicate writing talent with us – I mean it.
A.
Each, in their own way, will find ways to overlook undesirable things in the other even as they each continue to fall in love with this evolving, changing person they found in “Let It Happen.” Both will continue to change, and will never be the same from book to book in this series.
I hope you’ll get to read the other books — then I hope you let me know what you think.
Take good care,
S
