Let It Happen – Chapter XV
“You know, taking that risk, telling her like that, admitting a big mistake to someone you love … it’s the only thing you could do, Tina, under the circumstances. If you wanted a future together.”
Tina nodded, her tears beginning to form, again.
“It showed you respected her, and that you loved her. You must love her a lot, Tina.”
“Yes, yes I do.”
“She’ll come to remember that.”
“I…I’m not sure, Logan. It’s been close to two months, and I haven’t heard from her,” she was crying now.
Logan walked over to her side, and bent beside her, and then embraced her, cradling her as she cried.
“Tina, I look around this place, and see all the pictures that you have scattered around, of the two of you together. I remember how you looked at her, during that dinner in my place, and I look at you now, trying to keep it together for you….and for this baby. You know what I see?,” he asked gently, his own tears forming.
She drew away, and looked back at him, “No… what?”
He tucked her head back under his chin. “I see something that I don’t share with Melanie. Something I rarely see anywhere. But something I remember, back when your mom and my dad were married, and happy together.”
He continued, “It’s the eyes that have it. Your eyes. Her eyes. When you both look at each other, or towards the other. I envy how she must have looked to you, as you gazed at her, not as an object, but as a whole person. When she turned to you to ask whether it was ok with you that you come with me when I’d asked her … and when I asked you about her… you both had this look about the other. And now that I’ve been sharing a few hours now and then with you, privileged to enter your home, the home that you continue to share with her, in your heart, I’ve come to understand where that look comes from.”
He sat back on his heels, as Tina partially sat up on the couch, to look at him. He knows. He knows me. He knows how I feel.
“It’s the difference between what Melanie and I share… which isn’t bad at all. It’s what most people share, I suspect.”
