Let It Happen – Chapter XV
Logan could read between the lines, and had sensed as much, when George had been evasive when Logan had asked about Bette. He had mentioned to George that several people he had talked to had been impressed with the brunette, thus he wanted to ask George whether Bette could advise him about a few things as well “Just a few deals, if she’s interested.” George said he would mention it when he next talked to Bette, but was noncommittal.
Meanwhile, Tina’s pregnancy was beginning to show, but Logan elected not to comment on it.
Tina was drinking a Pellegrino, “it’s helping me deal with this, um, bit of nausea I’ve been feeling lately,” she explained, as Logan offered to refresh their drinks, waving at Tina to stay rested in the couch.
“Look, Tina, our cook is beginning to experiment with, um, healthier dishes to make for us. I’m trying to get control over this thing,” he laughed self-deprecatingly, as he patted his stomach. “So I was thinking we could send food over… you know… the healthier food. When he experiments he has to cook in certain batch sizes anyway. And it’s just Melanie and me at our place, so…”
Tina smiled. She could read Logan like a book now. He wanted to help without appearing to be doing so, “Logan, that’s really sweet of you and Melanie to offer. Only if it’s not a bother…” Logan cut in, “Great! I’ll get that started first thing tomorrow.” He whipped out his mobile to send texts to his staff at home.
After tapping out the text, he put his mobile back in his pocked, then stopped to look at the Jay DeFeo painting. “That’s a real gem, Tina. Excellent piece,” he commented, as he turned away from the painting to bring Tina her drink, then walked to the opposite side of the table to sit again on the carpet.
Tina nodded, began to tear up, as she said, “It’s Bette’s. A favorite.”
He smiled at her reassuringly. “I can look for her for you, if you want…” he started to say. Tina shook her head, “No…no, Logan. That’s something I’m trying to do on my own, or with a little help from, um, a contact of ours in the government. But I’m beginning to accept that, if she doesn’t want to be found, at least by me, then I shouldn’t try too hard to find her, you know? Bette will let me find her, when she wants me to.”
