Living for Love: Chapter 4
‘Eat what? What is this stuff’, Alice asked.
Shane said, ‘That is vegan rice cheese. That is soy ham with organic lettuce. They had some spinach problem so I had to go with lettuce. That is plain Silk soymilk. It’s one of Jenny’s favorite soymilk brands. And the sandwich is topped with grapeseed veganaise. It’s sort of like mayo but not as tasty or fattening. Remember the word "fat" when you eat this. Just tell yourself that if it tastes like poison, it must be good.’
After lunch, they said their goodbye’s and reminded Shane about 6:00 tonight. Shane would be there with bells on if it wasn’t so girly. Meanwhile, Alice and Dana worked out how they were going to handle things tonight. The nurse brought in Dana’s daily vitamin C capsule while they were talking.
Dana said, ‘Okay, let’s see. My parents walk in. They see everybody on the other side of the bed. They’ll probably think they’re all gay. So we just mention that Kit is seeing Angus.’
Alice agreed, ‘Yeah, oh wait. Why don’t we have Kit and Angus stand together and have the others stand sort of in a line?’
Dana said, ‘Yeah, yeah. That’s good. Bette can be first, then Kit, then Angus. Who’s next?’
‘How about Tina and Angelica’, Alice suggested.
Dana replied, ‘Okay. How about Helena next to Tina? It might help woo my mom considering Helena’s old money.’
Alice said, ‘Sure, sure. That sounds good. What about the Helena and Dylan thing? Do you think we should leave that out?’
Dana answered, ‘Yes! You don’t just tell parents that a friend of yours was screwed over for money.’
‘Okay, then. That just leaves Jenny, Shane, and Carmen’, Alice observed.
All the arrangements were made, 6:00 was hit, and everybody was in the room. Dana and Alice let everone know what was going to happen and how they wanted it. They all felt like they were in a prison lineup. Alice and Dana held hands and stared at the doorway. Then, there was a knock at the door.
Dana said, ‘Come in.’
The door opened and in walked Dana’s mother, Sharon, her father, Irwin, and her brother, Howie. Sharon walked over to Dana’s bedside and hugged her daughter. It was as though she had never done that before. Then she stepped back.
