    Living for Love: Chapter 4

That took a lot out of Dana. Howie walked to the other side of Dana’s bed. He stood in front of Bette, looked over to Dana, smiled at HIS sister, hugged Bette, and said under tears ‘Thank you. Thank you. Thank you’. Then he moved over to hug Kit, Angus, Tina, Helena, Jenny, Shane, and Carmen. He looked at Alice and Dana and saw a glow sparkle in their eyes. He knew that this was not a mistake. It wasn’t a tiny little fling or a near-death afterfall. This was love between two people who were meant to be together. He smiled at Alice and hugged her, cried like a baby, and said ‘Promise me that you’ll take good care of my sister.’

‘I promise’, she answered with a tear running down her left cheek.

Sharon took a step to Dana’s bedside. She was silent as the grave. Every step seemed to carry a 50 pound weight around her ankles. She took her eyes to Alice. Sharon stood right in front of Alice and said, ‘You brought my little girl back. Thank you. Thank all of you.’

She cried when she held Dana after hugging everybody. It was like she was holding her baby for the first time with all her heart and with all her strength. Irwin moved to the group on the other side and said, ‘Welcome to the family.’ They all embraced in one giant group hug while Dana and Alice just watched. For the first time since she woke up, Dana knew everything was perfect. Now, all she needed to do was get better so she could get out of the hospital and get on with her life.

The next day, Dana got to physical therapy a little early. She had a new respect for the people in that room. They were trying to get their bodies and their lives back together. She didn’t feel like she was better than they were but she wanted to know more about it all.

Dana thought, ‘That woman has no legs and she’s working to be fitted for prosthetics. She’s even doing walk training. He’s got no feeling on his left arm or his bottom half and he’s still pushing hard. How the hell are they doing all this? I had cancer, I got shocked, I came back, here I am, and here I go.’
