    Love’s Recovery

Bette balanced the phone between her ear and shoulder as she lifted her carry-on bag into the overhead compartment in first class.  Having all but tuned Phyllis out, Bette took her seat and closed her eyes to squelch the annoyance she felt rising inside of her.

“There is no way I’m traveling again next week, Phyllis.”  Bette did little to hide the irritation in her voice.  “I’ve secured the necessary funding for the upcoming expansion of the art program, I’ve given so many damn interviews to Art World I can’t even stand the sound of my own voice anymore, and CU is firmly ensconced in the art community as the place to be if one is serious about a career in art.  There’s nothing left for me to do but manage the budget you keep slashing from behind my large desk in the comfort of my own office.”

Bette smiled as the announcement came overhead alerting passengers that electronic devices could no longer be used in preparation of the flight leaving New York.

“I have to get off the phone, Phyllis,” Bette said as she flipped through an a copy of Art World to find her interview.  “And I plan on having a relaxing weekend with Tina and Angelica, so we can discuss this on Monday.”

“But I need you on the plane on Monday.”

“No,” Bette said, feeling comfortable in her authority given her recent success.  She was certain that Phyllis could not afford to let her go, which provided Bette with an extra sense of control.  Bette turned her phone off quickly assuming Phyllis would try to reach her once more before the plane was actually in the air.  She flipped to the center of the magazine, seeing a small picture of the interviewer from Art World staring back at her.  Her eyes began to scan the article that had her name sprinkled throughout it, being labeled as an expert in art caused Bette to smile.

Bette scanned her words quickly, remembering the interview that had taken place just over a month ago.  She had just completed her fifth and final interview, and despite the rise in Bette’s reputation in the art community, she was tired of being asked her opinion.  This particular interview had been the easiest of all to give, mainly due to the fact that she enjoyed the artist’s work.  The other interviews challenged Bette to not only critique what she found to be unimaginative and repetitive at best, but to present her assessment carefully.  She didn’t want to be seen as supportive of the work, yet also didn’t want to be too critical of newer artists being showcased by the popular magazine.

    1. Great Update!!! I had a feeling it was going to be Maxine. I feel so sorry for Kit. It is so wrong for Maxine to put Kit in the middle of her and Bette. Thank you PPS

    2. Nice set up for story/drama to come. Wow…Maxine is doing a painting of Tibette from Provocations…oh dear…that is reopening up a scar. Angie and her “dogs” – way cute! Can’t wait for next round!

    3. Hey Gumby, Interesting concept as Maxine has been out of Bette’s life for so long it is difficult to imagine what benefits it might offer if she c comes back.Kit is in a tricky position and treading carefully. There is so much heartache around Maxine’s departure that now might just be a good time to sort things out for once and all and then move forward.I can’t wait to read move.Thank you for this great beginning.Your Loyal Fan and Friend.
