    Love’s Recovery

When Maxine had shut the door to her car and sped off, Kit’s heart felt like it was breaking.  Just as they were beginning to feel like a family, something always seemed to tear them apart.  Kit had every opportunity in her life at that point, her career getting started and people more than happy to party with her and make her forget the collapse of her family, the death of her own mother who never seemed to recover from Melvin.  It was after she had died that Kit went to live with Melvin and Maxine, getting a chance to know her sister a little better if she would only try.  Her ferocious attempt to escape the reality of another family falling apart easily led to drugs.  The drugs easily led to her being shunned by Melvin and Bette, something that to this day hurt Kit more than she was ever prepared to acknowledge.

“You left a note saying you’d be out,” one of her staff members said, “I wanted to make sure the noise I heard in here was you.”

“I won’t be leaving until after the morning rush.”

“Having fun?”  The young woman folded her arms and leaned against Kit’s wall casually.  Kit was thankful that she had a close relationship with many of the people that worked for her, but after taking a chance on this particular woman, she was thankful she had.  Kit felt that giving someone a second chance was the least she could do, having begged for one from many throughout her life.

“Seeing an old friend,” Kit said without emotion.

“Is it a social visit?  You don’t look too happy about it.”

“I’m not sure myself.”  Kit allowed a chuckle to escape her tightly pressed lips.  “I don’t see this friend often.

    “Well have fun with it.”

Kit smiled as the woman turned and left the office.  “I’m afraid fun has nothing to do with it,” Kit whispered as she closed the desk drawer, concealing the letter once more.

The small marketplace was practically empty when the old woman entered the doorway, fixated on the newest volume of Art World.  She picked it up, unable to keep a smile from forming on her face.  She flipped through the pages until her eyes rested on a beautiful sight, a picture of Bette Porter from a recent opening of African sculptures.  Her eyes scanned the article, imagining Bette’s voice uttering the words she read quickly.

    1. Great Update!!! I had a feeling it was going to be Maxine. I feel so sorry for Kit. It is so wrong for Maxine to put Kit in the middle of her and Bette. Thank you PPS

    2. Nice set up for story/drama to come. Wow…Maxine is doing a painting of Tibette from Provocations…oh dear…that is reopening up a scar. Angie and her “dogs” – way cute! Can’t wait for next round!

    3. Hey Gumby, Interesting concept as Maxine has been out of Bette’s life for so long it is difficult to imagine what benefits it might offer if she c comes back.Kit is in a tricky position and treading carefully. There is so much heartache around Maxine’s departure that now might just be a good time to sort things out for once and all and then move forward.I can’t wait to read move.Thank you for this great beginning.Your Loyal Fan and Friend.
